85 toyota 4runner solid axle 4x4 22re EFI 5spd 214K miles this is a one owner truck and I have comprehensive maintenance records on it. all original stock, everything works, has a/c but needs a recharge. its tan with vintage 80's 4runner graphics and brown interior. has newer speakers and cd player. really just a nice runner in unmolested form.
in the past 6 months it has had a full tune-up, new alternator, starter and a new clutch
It runs and drives, in fact I drove it home 40 miles from where I bought it.
Here's the bad- its running on 3 cylinders right now. I'm not sure why and haven't had time to look into it. it could be something simple, or need a full rebuild. it also needs a rear glass, but the window does work. I can include a glass with it for $50. The drivers side door window can be a hard to roll up and down sometimes, so it may need a new regulator. It also has some rust around the rear fenders, but thats it.
I originally bought it to build it, but you know how that goes. I'd like to get $1200 for it. I'm pretty firm on that. I think that would be fair for the overall condition of the rig.
truck is located in Wake Forest and you're welcome to come by and look at it anytime.
pictures are in my gallery. any questions shoot me a pm. 12/24/2006 1:59:14 PM |

DAMN, would love to have this.. but not in the position to buy
Had an '85 yota truck i parted with, it had 197k and was just off a full engine rebuild... i got 1500 for it
If you haven't already, try advertising it on toyota4x4.com... i sold an older '84 truck with 260k, original axle with a completely rusted fram for around 750.00 12/24/2006 9:38:49 PM |

well, BigBlueRam took a look at it for me, so he might know more about exactly what is wrong. I drove it home almost 40 miles from near where it was bought and it did fine. probably could use a rebuild but I'd say it would be safe to drive for a while, I mean it would need the rebuild anyway.
pics are in my gallery. its the tan one. tho I might part w/ the blue one too. if you want more detailed pics pm me and I'll put them up.thanks for looking 12/30/2006 10:18:05 PM |

heres' what BigBlueRam said about it
"i didn't mess with it much. the previous owner claimed he had it diagnosed as the head gasket, but i saw no signs of that. there's no fluid contamination and it doesn't smoke a bit once it's warmed up. just a little bit of fuel smoke when it's warming up, probably from that dead cylinder.
it's the #3 cylinder, and i imagine a compression test would reveal a very low number. it's definitely not firing for some reason. it has spark and the plug is good. if the head gasket was blown bad enough to cause that much of a compression loss, there would be physical signs of it somewhere. it's also definitely not a piston/rings issue since it doesn't smoke.
my diagnosis in my very limited look at it is it's something in the head. most likely valve related. either it's burned/bent one, a cam lobe is worn/broken off, broken rocker arm, etc. i didn't have a chance to pull the valve cover off of it. i'm sure he probably wouldn't mind if you wanted to do that before buying it.
bottom line, i don't think it's a major problem but i can't say for sure. even at that, you'd be taking a risk depending on it as a solid driver. it does run just fine on 3 cylinders, obviously it runs just a little rough and is WEAK on power. it's one of those things that it could run fine another 100k, or it could puke it's guts the next time it's started. i would definitely try to definitively diagnose the problem if you get it.
all that said, it's still a very good deal for what it is. it's the cleanest/most solid 1st gen. 4 runner i've seen at that price. i sold my 84 for that much and it was a pile of junk compared to this one. it's also the most desireable of the 1st gen. 4 runners, having both the solid axle and the fuel injected motor. i'm really surprised it hasn't sold yet, i guess it's the time of year with christmas and all.
if you're strictly just looking for something to haul stuff, you may want to look for something else. you can get a nice 2wd truck for that kind of money that's already mechanically solid. if you want something you can use for work, play with a little, ride around with the top off in the summer, etc. then i'd definitely go for it." 1/2/2007 4:41:14 PM |
