were way more balanced

basically

polk has been ruled out

nob best buy klipsch maybe?
and infinity etc.

but polk sounded like shit not very balanced and too mid-strong

i listened to the rti 12 and the lsi15 today and wasn't impressed.

I would say either one of those would be good. The yamaha is on sale right now so if you are buying now I would go for that. But if you are planning on hooking up a bluray or HDDVD player you might want to wait and get a reciever that can decode DTS-HD and dolby digital plus.

i have some old infinity floor standers, RS-5 i think is the model. bass heavy as balls which isnt very inviting for music but they make good action movie left/rights and are cheap used.

Look at Klipsch reference. You should be able to get two RF-7 or RF-5's for 1k-1.5k. and easily two RF-82 speakers for 1k.

whatever you do, don't get a bunch of different random shit. whatever you start with, get that same series for your whole setup

also, it looks like you are interested only in speakers with alot of bass. You will be much happier getting some good bookshelf speakers and a good sub, especially if you are going to eventually do 7.1.

I do not want to have to have a $600+ sub to make up for poor speakers to start with right off the bat.

I'll eventually go get one. I honestly just want a balanced POWERFUL FULL RANGE set of speakers.

there used to be a place on independance across the street from target that carried really high end stuff...

not sure if they are still there, but that was a fun place to check out from time to time...

they can probably help you out if they are still around...

I personally understand Audiophileness... trust me I do... nothing like something loud as balls but so clean it can make you cry... but it always should be a question of "how much am I going to use this"... and how much really matters... b/c once you get it into your home you'll be surprised at how different a speaker can sound...

Also you get the joy of discrediting MP3's... they never sound bad... but they don't make your spine tingle like the real CD-Audio version... Loby seen of the matrix or the beach landing of Saving Private Ryan are phenominal ways to demo a system... Fanfare for the common man and metalica unforgiven or Nothing else matters are my favorite audio tracks for picking speakers... all of these selections will make your senses go CRAZY on an awesome setup...

and I dissagree about the not mixing sets... certain speakers will fit different needs of your room better than others and they might not be from the same series...

Not at all kidding. These speakers were formerly ~1k+ per pair. I have 4 and they sound nicer than anything I've heard at bestbuy/circuitcity/etc

Wha? To my knowledge, they don't carry the Reference line at Best Buy.

Besides, who the hell actually makes their hi-fi purchases at Best Buy?! Is there anyone that is truly that naive?

Go to Audio Advice and talk to Ivan

dood knows his shit. And he's hysterical. If greg is there you'll get Ivan and greg confused. Ivan looks like a greg, and greg looks like an Ivan.

^ You go listen to best buy's setup then go to Audio Advice and listen to a set of low end speakers they carry. $400+ish. You'll hear the vast difference. It's not something small, it's huge.

Then go listen to the state of the art and you'll wet yourself. I'm NOT an audiophile but I could hear the differences.

Anyone who makes a statment like this abviously doesn't know too much about audio.

#1 Klipsch horns are known to be a little harsh
#2 they're a little overpriced for what they are.
#3 there is no perfect speaker, I'm looking for people to suggest stuff for me to audition. you should know there is no single best speaker. every room sounds different every person hears different.etc.

the reason i made the bestbuy comment is many people that would make a statement like that would go there listen to them and can tell they sound decent in a box store with the chatter of 200 or so other people in there in the background then go home look them up online and find out they have a higher end line then what BB carries.
thus assuming they must be the best speaker ever and posting them in this thread and attempting to end the thread.... "/thread"

btw? anyone listen to axiom? that sub is supposed to be one of the best on the market.

There isn't anyone that has ever posted on this site that has either the money or the ear to discern "a little harsh" when comparing a quality speaker to some other quality speaker.

Sure, you can tell the shit from the decent stuff, but not the decent from the decent. You aren't going to be able to tell the difference in a good $500 set and a good $1.5k set, especially when the material you are feeding them is going to be pretty shitty compared to what it will take to be able to tell the difference between the two.

Understood.

Although the alledged harshness of the horns in Klipsch towers has in my experience been 100% attributed to amplifier quality - most don't have the sensitivity to supply a clean enough signal.

The Klipsch horn is an incredibly agile and revealing driver - imperfections are therefore more pronounced and thus the stigma "a bit harsh."

Never said they were the best ever - IMO that would be Wilson Audio or perhaps Martin Logan - but they are the best for the price range you mentioned.

Anyways, assuming your amplifier rig doesn't suck (ie - if you still have that Yamaha, never mind), then give strong consideration to these:

hook a titanium tweeter to any 3 way and you will be welcomed to "harsh" highs.

I think you might be the dumbest poster on this entire message board. You prove it time and time again. Its quite impressive and i admire your drive.
