$20 is pushing it, man.

And Charlotte sucks, by the way. I'd be willing to trade Charlotte for Myrtle Beach with South Carolina. Charlotte isn't even really part of North Carolina. It just sucks so bad. Otherwise, North Carolina rocks, but Charlotte...

^^^^gas might be more expensive, and if he is offering rides, one can assume he does have a larger vehicle (ie: a truck or suv that gets something more like 15-16mpg like mine)

also, i'm from charlotte, and door to door, it is 190 miles to my house, and you gotta understand, driving around in charlotte can take alot of time and distance- shit, it takes me a minimum of 20 minutes to get to any one of my friends houses in charlotte, and we are all in "south charlotte"

i wouldn't say he is rippin anyone off

Charlotte is not 140 miles from Raleigh, more like 170-180.

^^^Yeah, that one extra passenger on a trip he is going to be taking anyway really tacks on the extra cost.

^^I think $20 for a trip you're already going to be making is pushing it. That's my opinion.

^^^^Charlotte totally sucks. That fact should be stated and restated, regardless of the perceived topic at hand.

Total Est. Distance: 139.47 miles

granted that is the shortest distance route

at that it would be 15.97 in gas

at 170 miles if you take I85/I40 it would be 19.47 in gas

either way bro gets a free trip. this assumes 20 mph highway which 90% of cars (he states he has a car) probably get on the highway.

a fair charge would be lunch or 10 bucks.

10 bucks is normal for that distance, I would never pay 20.

the way I see it is, if somebody is willing to pay $20, then let him do it. Personally, I would just charge whatever the gas cost, so if there's more than 1 person, they can split the gas.

I haven't lived anywhere in NC beside the triangle area, so I wouldn't know. I don't plan to move out of the triangle area either.

I can agree on splitting the gas but to make the person pay for the complete fill up is retarded. You are already going there, so if they didnt go you would still be going to Raleigh. They are simply getting a ride and you are getting some money out of it, not a completely free drive.

taxi's are more expensive than that- i think that's what the average rate is given to people to compensate them for driving places for their job

why? you are providing a needed service, why not make a little for your efforts? if people are willing to pay $20, then why wouldnt he charge that much?

compensation rate for using your vehicle

it is a measure of how much it costs to operate your car

that would be valid if you were borrowing said car.

this is merely a ride on a trip that will be taken anyways.

economics says that any money is good since the trip is a fixed cost.

well no fucking shit

people are saying that 20 is too much

im throwing out how much it actually costs to operate the car to show that 20 bones isnt shit in the grand scheme

yes - and also if you are talking economics you are completely forgetting the "willingness to pay" concept

it doesnt matter how much it actually costs if people are willing to pay that amount.

its all about the consumer surplus baby

and for what its worth, if i was in charlotte and needed to get to raleigh and didnt have a car, $20 for a ride in a car would be well worth it to me

$20 isn't bad when you think about it in parent's terms. For a parent to drive their kid to Raleigh, drop them off, and drive back to Charlotte would mean more than $20 in gas and several hours out of their day. This is probably the market this guy is going for and it would be a good deal if he can find the right taker.

Indeed. Amtrak doesn't allow people to check stuff like ammo, guns, etc.—never mind laundry baskets. I would be a very sad panda if I had to ditch my laundry basket along with my cleaning gear.

Also, $20 < $24, and I'd be in a passenger car instead of herded into a train. Damn things always smell bad (just like charter busses).

It's cheaper than Amtrak, and not having to deal with my mother rampaging through my apartment putting shit where I can't find it is priceless.

you idiots

it doesn't even matter what it costs to him. The question is, are you willing to go with alternatives in order to shit this guy out of ten bucks he might well have deserved?

train?, probably not
cab? shit no.
plane?, i'm guessing if you're bitching about a 20 dollar 2 hour car ride being 10 bucks too much,... also no.

Ya know, the way I look at him, he was being congenial and offering people who may not have had transportation/wanted to drive a trip back... get off his nuts about the $20.

I mean, if we all wanna be greenies about it, he's keeping another car off the highway, conserving gas consumption, and reducing emissions.
