hey what do u experts think about the 40" Samsung LN40A500T1 LCD

* Resolution: 1920x1080 (1080p) @ 60Hz
* Response time: 5ms
* Viewing angle: 178H/178V
* Contrast ratio: 30,000:1
* Tuner: ATSC/NTSC/QAM
* Inputs
o 2x HDMI
o 2x Component
o 1x VGA
o 1x Composite

Got it for $700 OTD after a $70MIR. Seemed like a BF-like deal at the time so I jumped on it. Good deal or should I wait for BF?

I have the Harmony ONE and love it! It makes things so much easier, my wife doesnt have to try to figure anything out, and my friends are amazed that I have a remote with a touchscreen on it. Plus it goes nicely with my LN52a650

What's the difference between LCD and plasma?
And if I wanted to go 50" or more, which is better? what are the advantages of each?

If you cant decide between an LCD and a plasma go look at two of them. If one doesn't look obviously better to YOU do yourself a favor and buy the LCD. Perception is reality when it comes to TVs for home use.

That is the difference.

you'll hear the same ol' same ol'. lcd's are super bright so they lack color contrast, but they have better viewing angle. plasmas can have burn in, but they have rich colors and better blacks.

all of that shit is only true to a point and newer/more expensive models negate a lot of the issues. you should be happy with either imo.

From what I've seen from looking at a lot of lcd/plasma is that plasmas have richer blacks, better (less distracting) shadows, worse motion artifacts when compared to 120hz lcds, and a more natural color. LCDs were slightly sharper, more vivid, had more blocking/artifacts in the deep shadows, and smoother motion of fast moving objects. Overall I would pick an LCD in the size/price range I'm interested in (~50in under 1500 bucks) but the high end plasmas are outstanding. The lack of smoothness in the mid-lower end plasmas compared to 120hz lcds was disappointing.

Don't buy Sharp or LG

http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5iBHgLLGtYy35WBv054ztxo7VmWAAD94DJB9O2

Quote :
"WASHINGTON (AP) — Three Asian electronics firms have agreed to plead guilty and pay $585 million in fines for conspiring to drive up the prices of LCD screens used in computers, TVs, cell phones and other electronic devices.

In a plea deal filed Wednesday, LG Display Co. Ltd., Sharp Corp., and Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd. agreed to cooperate in an antitrust investigation headed by the U.S. Justice Department. The plea agreement was filed in federal court in San Francisco.

LCDs, or liquid crystal display monitors, are the glass display screens on many laptop computers, cell phones and new TVs.

Deputy Assistant Attorney General Scott D. Hammond said the scheme cost not only consumers, but also retailers including Dell Inc., Motorola Inc. and Apple Computer Inc. He did not have a cost value for the losses, and said the investigation is continuing.

"These price-fixing conspiracies affected millions of American consumers who use computers, cell phones and numerous other household electronics every day," Hammond told reporters at a Justice Department briefing. "By conspiring to drive up the price of LCD panels, consumers were forced to pay more for these products."

There is a $70 billion worldwide market for LCD screens. Regulators in Asia and the European Union also have opened investigations into LCD pricing.

The Justice Department said LG Display, a South Korean company, and its LG Display America Inc. unit agreed to pay a $400 million fine for participating in a conspiracy to fix the price of certain LCD panels from September 2001 to June 2006. That is the second highest criminal fine ever imposed by the Justice Department's antitrust division.

Chunghwa, a Taiwanese company, agreed to pay $65 million for participating with LG and other unnamed companies in the price-fixing conspiracy between September 2001 and December 2006.

And Sharp, a Japanese company, agreed to pay $120 million for participating in separate conspiracies to fix the price of certain LCD panels sold to Dell, Motorola and Apple between 2001 and 2006. Those panels were used in computer monitors, laptops, Motorola Razr mobile phones and Apple's iPod portable music players.

"After carefully taking into consideration the applicable laws and regulations, the facts and other factors, Sharp has decided that the best possible course of action would be to conclude the aforementioned agreement," the company said in a statement, adding that it will record the fine as an extraordinary expense in the quarter that ends in December.

Sharp also said its chairman and chief executive and some company directors will voluntarily return 10 percent to 30 percent of their compensation for three months starting in December due to "inconvenience and/or anxiety to our shareholders and other persons concerned."

"Sharp understands the gravity of this situation and will strengthen and thoroughly implement measures to prevent the recurrence of this kind of problem, and will earnestly work to regain the public's confidence," the company said.

Representatives from LG Display and Chunghwa could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon. "

funny thing is i never considered buying LG or Sharp in part because they were more expensive, so just goes to show you price fixing doesn't work if you aren't competitive.

What's the best deal of all the black friday sets out there? I'm considering getting a tv for my bedroom, mostly for movies and maybe occasional video games.

anything 27-47" is under consideration, I'd just like to keep it under 800 bucks.

I just bought the 50inch version of that panasonic you're looking at. Sweet tv too. Natural, outdoors type colors look the best on it, like browns, greens, etc. It took me a couple days to adjust from the lcd that I have, but now I like the color on this one much more.

Looking to get a ~40" 1080p TV for under $1000, but would like to keep it cheap. Is getting a Samsung/Sony for the extra money over a Vizio?

Do you really think you can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p at 40" (assuming you're not going to be using as a PC monitor or primarily with a HTPC)?

as for sony/samsung vs. vizio, do you have such sensitive eyes that the very slight differences in quality will really be noticeable to you... or do you just want to make sure your guests see a premium brand logo on your TV when they come over?

The answer to those questions made me choose a 42" 720p vizio for $600

I haven't yet felt that I should have gone for a more expensive set.

QUESTION:

any reason anyone can think of that sound doesn't work on WRAL's digital HD channel? I'm using the feed coming over time warner cable's lines.. the SD version of the same digital channel works fine, just the HD one has no sound. picture is incredible.

TV model is a Panasonic TC-32LE60 LCD

Have you tried rescanning your tuner to allow for any PSIP changes WRAL may have done to their digital stream?

If that does not work, Call RAL and ask for engineering. Someone there will be able to help you. 821-8500

I should look at search results a little better...

I think I'm gonna get the Panasonic 50" 1080p TC-P50G10
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889187123

Prob will order elsewhere, since its out of stock at Newegg right now. Buy.com has a good price on it too.

I've been a fan of Panasonic plasmas for a long time, and now that my roommate is gone, so is the TV. Any thoughts or suggestions before I order this tomorrow?

When I was shopping around last year, I remember narrowing it down to a few models, starting to shop around and found something about buy.com not being an approved seller or whatever and so the manufacturer's warranty wasn't valid. This may be true only for certain brands (I was looking at samsung and panasonic at the time, might have been either or both) and it may not apply anymore, but it's something to factor in when deciding where you buy from.

Well they're ordered from buy.com (I ordered 2 of them - one for me and one for my grandfather). I called their CS and the warranty is the standard manufacturer's warranty, like normal. Hopefully they'll come in around the time I move to my new place on the 28th so my parents can bring it here with them.

I think i'm gonna go for this model:
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-BRAVIA-KDL-52V5100-52-Inch-1080p/dp/B001T9N0FS

compusa has it for 1599
sears has it for 1699
sears has a 110% price match guarantee for identical items
which would bring it down to 1439 + tax

i'm guessing they're going to try to weasel out of it somehow. but i'll give it a shot. anyone have luck using sears price match plus on a TV?
