Why would you want to use it though in the first place? For sports I see the appeal.

because different people like different things?

it's a refreshing (ha!) change akin to gaming at 25fps vs 60fps

funny, I don't watch sports much. I bet it would tidy up some hockey pretty well

Forcing 24 fps movies to be smoothed at higher rates (often known as the "soap opera effect") is one of the worst ways to bastardize a movie. There's a reason the "cinema effect" is specifically 24 fps. Different people prefer different things but in this case those people who watch movies with the soap opera effect are just wrong.

Ahh, that is a great analogy for that effect. It definitely looks like a soap opera! I keep the "smoothing" option turned off on my TV, but my parents keep theirs on. Everytime I watch a movie or TV show at their house, it drives me nuts because it looks so fake.

Is now a good time to purchase a 60+ inch 4K TV, or would it be best to allow the prices to go down while other technologies catch up to the higher resolution?

Would it currently be reasonable to expect to find a decent 4K TV for less than $3000?

I'd still wait for a lot of content to come out. They just announced 4k Bluray players but they won't flood the market for a while so I'd still wait.

While the Black Friday deals aren't that great this year, I need a TV. Looking for 60", sub $1k. Normally I'd stayed away from Vizio, they seemed to be the kind of default "good but not great" TV that people buy on price, but one caught my eye. Dell has the Vizio M60-C3 going on a midnight "online doorbuster" for $799, so if I can grab one, thinking it might be the way to go.

Here are the full specs (http://www.vizio.com/m60c3.html) but basically it's a 60" 4k, full-array backlight with local dimming, true 120Hz. The only thing I can see that it's missing is HDR capability--how big a deal is that?

Any good reason not to get this set (other than my perhaps unjust disdain for Vizio in general)? I haven't seen anything else under a grand that comes close in specs and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive.

P-series is over my budget. 1199 is the lowest I can find it for in 60". And it's not that I want Vizio, honestly I'd rather not, but the numbers seem to add up. If there's a better sub-1k option I'd like to know.

^60 Hz. Plus it's one of those Best Buy exclusive models, possibly a "Black Friday special", which I'm suspicious of as you don't know what internal differences there are from the more widely sold models in that line.

a friend just bought a samsung 4k and its a costco model. it's like it assumes you have a hardware deinterlacer so the picture isn't very good on its own. im sure it'd be fine run through a receiver. fyi - lots of stuff is still broadcast as 1080i like cbs football

have been meaning to buy a new tv stand since i picked up a larger center channel earlier in the year on craigslist - prefer to be able to put the center channel in the tv stand - anyone recommend something that will hold 8" H x 23.5" W x 12.5" D - i use a logitech harmony so the rest of the equipment can be hidden behind doors if needed

As I should have expected that Dell Vizio deal was gone in the maybe 30 seconds it took me from refreshing the site to clicking 'confirm purchase'. Guess I'll wait for the Super Bowl sales in February. My wife tried to convince me after that fell through to get a Panasonic set with the same specs, but it was 1200... I just couldn't justify spending $400 more for the same thing. There was literally nothing, not a damn thing, else with the same key specs (60", 4K, local dimming, true 120Hz) for below $1000.

the "spec sheet" for a tv is hardly a reasonable benchmark for comparing tvs. the stuff that matters isn't standard so it's never advertised. if you're going with an led backlight, the number of local dimming zones, the hardware de-interlacer, color gamut, etc. you really need to go look at them. having said that, i'd much prefer a 1080p tv under 2000 than a 4k. there aren't a ton of mature, good looking 4k tvs out there less than 3k and there's no 4k content either. I got a 4k tv to use as a digital picture frame over my fireplace and prefer my panasonic 1080p plasma for tv.

How soon will the Super Bowl sales begin?

I'm considering purchasing either a 55" 1080p flat OLED TV or ULTRA 4K flat OLED TV; however, I was hoping to not spend more than $3000, so the 4K TV may be out of the equation.

I'm less concerned with viewing angle and more concerned with minimizing glare, and I'm hoping to mount it to the chimney above my fireplace.

Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated!

Netflix already has a few 4k shows and there's plenty of Youtube 4k content. I have a couple friends who have gotten 4k tvs and they say it's worth it. Also upconverted 1080p content on a 4k tv does look better in some cases. All depends how close you sit to it. At this point if you're buying a new TV and there's a good deal on a good quality TV I'd probably go 4k. 4k Bluray players are coming out as well and I'm sure more content will be coming along in 2016.

I've got a 4k tv and it's not worth it short of a $3000+ tv. at really low price points there's not much difference, but cheap 4k tv's don't look good.

Amazon, Netflix, Youtube, PS Video and i'm sure more all have 4k streaming. My 55" 4k TV is fairly small at 9' away, but i'm wowed when i see 4k stuff. The good TVs like Sonys do upscale very well.

That said, there's no way i'd drop $3-4k on a 4k TV when its so early in its definition. Although the new "UHD" spec is supposed to standardize 4k, HDR, and other standards. At least get a 2016 with that standard.

I guess this is the quasi official thread. Got a 50" 4K Vizio the other day, very pleased with the picture quality. Only like $650 at Costco and when you stream 4k content, you can tell the difference, especially up close. My first 1080p TV, let alone 4k, so my expectations have been more than met.

Of course, they're going to unveil 8k TVs at CES this year, so I think I need to get in the HDMI business.

I just bought a 65" OLED (OLED65B6P from LG) for $2400 a couple weeks ago. I have been dreaming about picture quality this good since the tech demos of SED TVs like 8-10 years ago. It has a feature that periodically shifts the picture a little bit in a different direction to minimize burn-in. I don't understand why the LG OLED TVs are subject to burn-in while I have never seen an issue with burn-in on Samsung OLED cell phones, which almost always have static content at the top and bottom of the screen.

If you do end up getting an LG OLED, I would recommend keeping it offline or blackholing the following domains since they like to share your viewing habits with advertisers and they also scan your network and attached hard drives/thumb drives for media files and such and phone home with anything it finds:

If you walk into any Best Buy and look at all the floor model Samsung phones they all have pretty bad burn in. I asked someone about it and they said it's just because they're on all the time.

I have my Note 5 set to keep the screen on when charging (the option is in the android developer options). It probably spends 6-8 hours a day on and at the home screen and I don't see any burn-in. I've had the phone since launch day over a year ago.

When I went to get a replacement Note 5 I played with the Note 5's and S7's in the store and the majority of them had burn in. I don't see it on my Note 5 but it was bad in the store.

I *think* that's the 60" version of the TV I have in 55". I paid 699 for mine in October, so if you can snag the larger version for 599, sounds like a deal. I'm no expert but I've been happy with it and 4k content looks pretty damn amazing.

Reading the reviews, it appears that it doesn't have bluetooth...so you need wires for the soundbar. Although I'd like to be able to go wireless, we already have holes in the wall (hidden) and the setup to run wires without them being visible. Other comments on reviews are that it's not technically 120hz, but 120 hz "motion rate"...so it's basically 60hz. I don't think I've ever noticed significant picture quality differences in other TVs for this to bother me. Still struggling with this decision.

Basically the same model (mine is a UN55KU6290). Not sure what, if anything, is signfied by the 6270 vs 6290 numeric difference; might just be the "target model" versus the "best buy model". You are correct, it's not legit 120hz. 60hz with that annoying upconversion, which I turned off immediately. But I've found that as time has gone on 120hz seems less common--at the price point I was looking (arbitrarily set sub $800 for 55" or better) I didn't find anything from a reputable brand that was actually 120. You had to move up to the Vizio M series to get legit 120hz, and that was around $900. I don't think it has bluetooth, but like you, I've got wiring for speakers in that room so wired front/center channels is no problem.

Again, I'm no cinemaphile, but I've been happy with it other than that the color balance is kinda wonky. Need to calibrate it. Picture quality is good though and 4k content from amazon/netflix looks damn good. Mine is in a basement, so I can't say much about what it would look like in a room with a lot of light. I was happy with it at $699 for a 55" so, again, $599 for a 60" seems like a great deal.

In the market for a new TV in a couple weeks or so, gonna take some of my refund money and upgrade to a 4k. 60-65 in hopefully and I'd like to keep it around the $1000 mark if possible.

You guys use any special websites to keep track of sales and whatnot? Right now I just poke around Amazon, Dell, etc and keep an eye on slickdeals.

After a lot of research I wound up going with a Samsung 8000 series, found this guy at a decent discount this week and pulled the trigger:

Will likely use the GC for a PS4Pro and decent new wireless router.

The E-Series has a lower refresh rate and minimal-to-no support for HDR.

Still it's not a bad price for a Vizio, they're pretty solid.

Yeah, I saw a lot of discussion on different sites about the seller. For what it's worth, here was my experience. Up front, let me say that I put in an order on that model with eBuyUSA but wound up canceling, because I decided to buy a different model.

After I submitted my order, I didn't even get a confirmation. After a couple of days, I figured that if they weren't going to process it, I'd just cancel. The problem is that I forgot to save the password I'd generated for my account in the password manager, and the site's password reset feature wasn't working.

So I sat on it. Monday, I finally got a confirmation email for my order. Yesterday, I got a call from eBuyUSA from a guy who identified himself as Joe.

He said they didn't have any of the B6s in stock, because it's last year's model (true) and isn't manufactured anymore (probably true). He warned me that it'd probably take two weeks to source one from a distributor then another 5-7 days before I'd take delivery.

I told him I'd probably just cancel, but he tried to upsell me on a 55" B7 instead. He quoted me $1,690.00 on the B7 with free 1-2 day shipping.

The B7 lists for $2,499.00 on their site, which is consistent with Best Buy and the like. So that's a hell of a deal. I told him I'd think it over and call him back.

I decided to just cancel and called back. This time, I spoke to a guy named Al. He saw that Joe had quoted me on the B7 and gave me a bit of a spiel about how much better the B7 was, with an OLED lifetime of 100K+ hours and all that. I told him I didn't know whether I'd take him up on that but asked if he'd give me that quote in writing. He said sure, he'd email me the quote and honor that price if I changed my mind.

Honestly, there was zero pressure, and I didn't get the sense that either of them was trying to snow me. Maybe I'm a pigeon, but I don't think so.

Sounds like those BH Photo/Beach/camera retailers from years past with the bait and switch BS.

I figure anytime they have dedicated sales people grinding to earn a piece of the action that's not where I want to be as there are more efficient ways to do these things, but if the deal is good enough and the warranty is solid perhaps I'd consider it. I usually let the Slickdeals type people vet that shit and just poach on the deals they source.
