i'd LIKE to spend less than $50, but i doubt that's possible...it's not something i'll be using on a regular basis, just a once every couple of months thing...suggested brands/models? anyone have one they want to sell me?

CompUSA on Gleenwood has KVM stuff in stock if you need it fast but it will be over $50. I think you could do it for < $100.

Is this something you could use VNC or Remote Desktop for? Or, since it's every few months, could you do a 'manual' KVM switch and move it all from one box to the other yourself?

personal use...and i've debated the vnc option, but in a lot of cases, the computers i'm working with don't have have vnc installed, so i'd still have to hook it up in order to install it

VNC is an easy install--just click OK 4 or 5 times and your done.

Whether you go VNC or KVM, you're still going to have to spend the time to hook up the other computer.

I've had good luck with Belkin KVM switches, though all the ones I've used are PS2/VGA

I've found the Belkin's glitchy. The 4 ports we use in the shop will sometimes decide not to recognize the mouse and keyboard. (model F1DB104P)

I use an F1JB104P...I do have 3 mice hooked up for 3 systems, but its always worked fine with just one monitor and keyboard (although like I mentioned, its VGA and PS2, not DVI and USB)

I think some of the incompatibilities come from different OS's from what I've read
