I got a Surround Sound system for Christmas and have been trying all night to get it to work with my Sony A2000 TV. I am using an optical cable from the TVs digital audio out to the receiver's audio IN, and I can't get any audio. I have tried everything, but I can't seem to find a way to get the audio to go through. Does anyone have this setup and able to help out?

Its an Onkyo 7 Series 7.1 Surround sound system. I will get the model number here in a second.

I have Directv hooked up to the tv via Componant cables, an upconversion DVD player throught HDMI, and a PS3 through HDMI.

I tried testing the receiver and cable by plugging into the directv box directly and it works fine, so it seems like the TV jhust isn't sending anything over the cable.

I actually called Sony and the lady told me that there is an option in the Sound menu that lets me choose to direct the audio to an external source, but I clearly don't have that option so I'm getting frustrated.

If the TV's internal speakers work, then you should just be able to plug it in and go, and make sure that option to send the sound out the optical is set in the TV.

Is the red light on in the optical out port of the TV?

I have an Onkyo receiver and on mine there is a digital input button on the receiver itself (and not one on the remote) that toggles between no digital input, coax, and optical. I can't find a good picture of the receiver you have online so I can't tell if yours is like mine or not but that's something to look for.

^ I have gotten it to work with optical on other equipment, just not on the tv which is the problem.

^^ I don't see the red light on the optical out on the tv which makes me think hat its not set to send audio out through optical, however when it is plugged in and I look at the other end of the cable I see the red light.

I have looked all over in the settings and the manual and can't find anything that lets me set the audio out.

yeah you need to turn that feature on, on the Television. It's usually set to off by default.

weird most tvs have a turn speakers off and send signal to digital out option somewhere.

The optical out on your TV is only for 5.1 sound from OTA broadcasts and nothing else.

monoprice.com has a good price on those optical cables you need...also you can get some nice quality cables from big lots that will do the coax digital audio (the stereo RCA cables they have would work great for that, they're well shielded) and they are like $3.99 or something like that. big lots didnt have optical cables last time i looked tho.

I've never seen a TV that would passthrough the 5.1 signal anyway.

LG will take the 5.1 as an input from an optical, but only outputs 2ch stereo (it reencodes it i'm guessing).

I was going to tell you to just hook everything up directly anyway, because that's the only way to get all 5.1.

My TV (Samsung DLP) does audio switching and decoding. I have my Xbox360, DVR and HD-DVD player (for dvds that don't synch through the analog outs (because my reveiver sucks and doesn't have delays)) connected to the TV and an optical cable out to my receiver that. Even the 360 with only 2 rca plugs outputs 5.1 sound through the optical cable.

^ In case you don't realize it, you're not getting the full 5.1 audio track from all your devices.

If the receiver is getting a digital 2 ch. stream, it still might light up the same as if it was getting the same stream but in 5.1

It's IMPOSSIBLE to get the full 5.1 audio from the 2 red/white cables.

I know it's not the full 5.1 track like it would be if I used the optical out directly from the xbox.
