"According to Westinghouse, the TV does not really target the consumer market, but high-end industrial applications. What we saw was a demo of an oil company viewing a digital version of a mining site. And even at this very specialized application, the difference to the best 1080p we saw at CES appeared to be marginal, at least to our eyes. However, of course you do see a much clearer picture when compared to some lower-priced 1080p TVs. Westinghouse said that it has begun taking orders for the 2160p. However, the TV will not come to the consumer market anytime soon. Company officials decline dto comment on pricing, but the highest resolution on the market combined with limited availability are a good indication for one pricey TV."

i can't imagine much of a difference unless your screen is 100"+

Congratulations on making a completely irrelevant comment.

100+ inches and you're 5 ft away

i mean... football stadiums won't benefit by it.

Its not for watching movies. I can see many business uses for having a very large 3840x2160 resolution monitor. All I've heard is people rag about how pointless this is. This is just a larger version of Apple's 30" displays (that everyone raves about).

(almost) Twice the size of an apple display... twice the resolution. Makes sense.

I guess they would use it for looking at very detailed images without having to zoom in to see detail, they could just move their head. I think they might use them for 3D stuff too (stereoscopic 3D stuff).

please, enlighten us as to any industrial benefits of a screen like this.....

your analogy deals with economics of scale.....

the screen lacks that....

the human eye is but so good. after a point, the quality difference is not noticable. from 15 feet, I defy you to determine the difference btw. 1080 and 720 on a 42" screen.

TV monitors at stadiums, race tracks, fair grounds... You could also have the screen split up into a lot of smaller screen to view multiple inputs such as a complex security system. Or the View screen on the USS Enterprise...

you can cad on a fucking ti-82 screen...

^^ again, a size deal, only practical at 100" plus level, but then you aren't sitting close enough to notice at that point anyways.....

Analyzing satellite or GIS data without distortion and without having to scroll.

Proofing digital scanning of video film.

Anything that NASA has to do with space imagery.

CAD work.

other than NASA stuff, that all is only practical at very large sizes, then you wouldn't be that close to notice the difference....

not to mention why the fuck would you use a TV for any of these thing other than a large LCD/projector at a high resolution?

who cares what it is - TV/LCD/projector - you'll find that industry types generally don't get as worked up as you about the underlying technology of the tool as much as they are concerned with whether or not it will help them get the job done.

that being said,

what does industrial applications mean???

I dunno... there was a UHDTV demonstration at the World Expo '05 that was insane. The line was like 5 hours to see it. Don't see the technology benefiting the average Joe though.

Higher resolution would be beneficial at closer distances as well.

Your only gripe is that Westinghouse is calling it a TV rather than a monitor.
