"The new issue of EGM (February no. 212) has the goods on a few unannounced games according to Gaming Target, namely Guitar Hero: 1980s Edition for the PS2. The title is expected to ship sometime this spring (alongside Guitar Hero II for the Xbox 360 maybe?). And though a 3-4 month release for an unannounced game seems oddly quick, EGM merely states, "trust us; it's coming." More Van Halen better be on that if true.

Other games announced in the newest issue included Tomb Raider: Anniversary for 360, a pair of RPGs for the PS2, Half-Life 2: Orange for 360 and PS3, and Midway's Blacksite: Area 51 (multi?). Click through for detailed descriptions of each."

I really think they'll start pumping these out now that people in the music industry have realized that A) it's a guaranteed profit and B) the development team isn't going to butcher their songs (other than "Search & Destroy").

The platform is already in place. You would assume that these sequels would start coming out at a faster rate.

According to EGM, some bands require the cover of the song to sound different from the original.

I don't doubt it, but in the case of "Search & Destroy," I think the shredders doing the game couldn't put themselves in the mindset of just sort of thrashing at the guitar instead of playing succinct rhythms.

having never played the game and only seeing my friends play it a few times, i did notice that "Search and Destroy" sounded absolutely horrible

http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2007/05/10/seven-tracks-from-guitar-hero-rocks-the-80s-announced

Quote :
"We're still enjoying Guitar Hero 2 on the 360, but of course no one is happy with the state of downloadable songs for that console. For people who need more spandex in their lives however, we've just received word from Activision about the upcoming 80s expansion pack, Guitar Hero:Rocks the 80s. The add-on pack is heading our way this summer, and will be available "exclusively" for the PlayStation 2. That makes no sense—they're not going to throw away money by not making this available on the 360, are they?

The 30 tracks are still mostly a mystery, but they did tell us a few tracks we can expect

* I Wanna Rock (by Twisted Sister)
* I Ran (by Flock of Seagulls)
* Round and Round (as made famous by Ratt)
* I Want Candy (as made famous by Bow Wow Wow)
* Metal Health (as made famous by Quiet Riot)
* Holy Diver (as made famous by Dio)
* Heat Of The Moment (as made famous by Asia)

That's certainly a start. No price for the package has been released yet, and of course most of these are cover versions so the quality will most likely be hit or miss. If they wanted to make us very happy, they could also release this pack as a download for the 360 and charge us the same price as the PS2 retail disc. They would save money on packaging and shipping the game, we get our songs, and they enjoy enhanced margins.

Anyone listening? "

If they don't release this as downloadable content for the 360 I will be one pissed off motherfucker.

And more than that, if they don't release this as a seperate game (with seperate achievements/goals/whatever) on the 360 I will be pissed. As the article says, there's no reason no to.

Yeah I don't see why they wouldn't release this for the 360 as well. I know GHII didn't come out too long ago, but they're going to move units regardless. They should have released GHI for the 360 as well for $50-$60 instead of making us try to download all the old songs.

I would even be ok with them releasing the 360 version a month later, that wouldn't bother me too bad.

Now back to playing GHII, haha.

I think it's awesome.

And I was personally outraged at the butchering of Ziggy Stardust on GH1.

I am down with all of these choices. They're fun, which is something a lot of the songs in GH2 were not, either because of being too hardcore metal for the general audience, or just terrible fucking translations ("Heart-Shaped Box" & "Search and Destroy": attention GH developers, the Stooges didn't play in perfect fucking meter, and there's no big solo in HSB; if you can't get it right, don't bother). All the little runs in "I Want Candy" are entertaining as hell.

gotta be honest this is a weak list IMO. where's poison and all the rest of those guys? metallica? (though they probably wouldn't give a dang thing to help out considering they're copyright freaks)... idk just seems like they should be getting bigger names... i mean.. AC/DC anyone?

They deliberately add solos to give guitarists' a stronger role. They made changes to a lot of songs.

I understand that, but there's a difference between the small embellishments in song like "You Really Got Me" versus adding entire sections that never existed. I never thought HSB was a good choice for GH, and I don't think that any song that's not riff-based is a good choice, either. "Monkey Wrench" is a damn good song, for instance, but it's no fun to play on GH, because it's not riffy like "Frankenstein" or "Carry On Wayward Son."

I think the negative response to the overall song selection in GH2 is going to inform the choices for the subsequent games in a positive way.

i think "Monkey Wrench" is one of the most entertaining songs to play on the game

on expert, you don't have a second to breathe

That's one of the problems. You don't have a second to breathe, but it's just hammering down two note lines, nothing with rhythm or flow.

It also doesn't help the fun factor that it's a million times harder to play on GH than it is on a real guitar; the main riff on a real guitar is one finger only and everything else is power chords (and some hammer-on power chords at that).

To each his own, I suppose.

"Activision has let slip the names of a brace more tracks for this summer's PS2 exclusive, Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the '80s.

Notice that 'Encore'? That wasn't there before. We smell a new brand extension. This could well be the first of a wave of themed song packs for Activision's all-conquering axe-wielder.

Where this new direction leaves the proposed avalanche of downloadable tracks for 360 Guitar Hero II, we're not sure.

Anyway, never mind the speculation, here's the ROCK:

* 18 and Life - Skid Row
* Bathroom Wall - Faster Pussycat
* Lonely is the Night - Billy Squier
* Nothing But a Good Time - Poison
* Play With Me - Extreme
* Shaken - Eddie Money
* Synchronicity II - The Police "

Wow. Tons of cover songs in this version. That kinda sucks. So far the only announced songs that aren't covers are I Wanna Rock - Twisted Sister & I Ran (So Far Away) - A Flock of Seagulls. Everything else is a cover.

All of the songs (aside from the bonuses) in GH and GH2 are covers, there's no reason to get disappointed just because there are some masters in GH3.

Yeah, before I looked, I would have thought that 30-40% of the songs in GHII were originals. I didn't realize there were only 4. I guess it's just that the ones that stand out as covers REALLY stand out. but I read somewhere that they were contractually obligated to make them different. I just hope there isn't a lot of that in this new version.
