Hey ya'll,

My cousin's 9 yr old son was diagnosed with leukemia in November. Long story short- he hasn't responded to chemotherapy and his only hope is a bone marrow transplant. His organs are beginning to fail and the doctors have put him on the waiting list for B negative blood. It is a very rare blood type. If you have this blood type or know ANYONE who does please PM me. We can make arrangements for a direct donation to benefit Brendan.

Please, please help if you are able. This kid is nine. He still has high school and proms, and girlfriends and driving and all that fun stuff ahead of him. He's too young to die. Please PM me if you have B negative blood.

I can't remember if I'm B- or AB-. How would you find out without donating blood first?

wish I could help. I have AB- blood which is the rarest type of blood. Out of 100 donors only 2 people will have b- blood. My thoughts are with ya.

Theres kits you can buy for about 10 bux that you can check your own type at the house. It will have a little device to prick your finger and stuff.

o negative is the universal donor for blood but for bone marrow I dont know how that works.

I think he can take O negative as well.


He is blood type b and is rh negative.



He is on a waiting list- but it's a four year long waiting list. This kid doesn't have that long. It's so sad.

eleusis it might be in your med records somewhere? I found mine out when I donated blood through Red Cross a few years ago. I don't know where else or how else to find out.

The bone marrow is a whole other story- right now we'll settle for blood only.

from what i know..

it isnt that easy.. a lot of other things HAVE to match not just blood type... that is why its so hard to find one

Yo I'm O- but I don't know if I am allowed to donate blood because I was born in the UK. I am not able to donate blood to the Red Cross. I'm not sure if special cases like this would apply, but I would be happy to help if I can.

Well ya'll bad news. I just got off the phone with my Aunt who I hadn't spoken to since yesterday morning. Brendan had a seizure- his heart stopped and is now on life support. It was all very fast. It was called Acute Myelogenous Leukemia in case anyone wants to know. They're disconnecting him at 7pm tonight.

I am heartbroken for my cousin. Absolutely heartbroken. This was her only child- he was also developmentally disabled- and she had her tubes tied last year.

It sounds harsh, but a swift death vs. years of agonizing procedures and little hope might have been merciful.
This thread could be put to good use, to push people to find out their blood type and to give as often as they are allowed. (I know it isn't the same as marrow, but still helps out your fellow man)

If you're going to go through the trouble of buying a kit for $10, you should definitely just go give blood. It's not only a free way to find out your blood type, you end up with a t-shirt and food...you actually come out ahead. Plus, you're giving life to someone. It's a good feeling.

Let this story be a reminder to everyone to give blood! Unless you have a medical reason, don't fit the criteria, or tried to and can't, everyone should give blood at least once a year.

I can't give blood anymore and I'm one of the rarer (A-). I lived in london when I was a kid. A few years back they made it so that anyone who lived in the isles for more than 3 months since something like 1980 can't give blood because of mad cow. I think it's retarded. I used to give at least 4 times a year.

If you can handle the process and have time, you should be giving platelets instead of blood. The need for those is higher.

As far as the tattoo thing rule - it depends on where you're donating (red cross, or a place like rex blood services), and where you got your tattoo/piercing. If you got it done in a licensed parlor in NC, you're good to donate, because NC regulates parlors so tightly.
