i.e. an ipod video/zune with say 1gb of flash memory,(even 256mb would be plenty since that's like 60 songs )but the hard drive would load the playlist onto the flash drive and go idle. this would allow you to go running or hell even jump rope for a couple hours w/o worrying ab damging the hard drive, and it would increase battery life . so you get eh benefits of flash +masive storage, of coruse it'd be even beter to have just flash but 30gbs of flash would be $$texas. i know current hd players have a tiny buffer to eliminating skiping and stuff but it seems dumb no one has created a combo player.

a combo player seems too much and a bit silly.

currently there are 8 GB flash players, so that's plenty for plenty of people.

30 GB flash music players [affordable] will be out within 2 years.

I just don't get why anyone would want to run around with a big ass brick attached to their arm or hip, when the $79 shuffle weighs less than a watch.

me too ... one day the 'fad' of having an ipod will be over, and then people will start thinking and buy the smallest device with a decent amount of memory ... who the hell really really needs 20 gigs of music at once ... (although that may still be an ipod, i was speaking to the big Ipods that people like to flash to people)

I listen to a lot of live dj sets. 1 file is usually over 100mb. only being able to switch around between 7 or 8 would suck balls.

well there are people like me who don't wanna spend $ on somehting without a screen and is limited to just music. if i'm on a road trip or camping out for some other expensive piece of electronics it's nice to have video. and 8gb is nothing when u start adding video the zune weighs in at a whoopin 5.6 onces adding 256 of flash wounld't change that by much.i agree too many people are being insecure about their e-penis and buying 80gb ipods etc. but with videos and music 20-30gb is reasonable

I don't need 20gb of music at once, but I don't feel like sifting through the 70gb on my computer to pick out the 1gb that I want on each particular day. And god help me if I start counting videos.

you do realize this is how every hard drive MP3 player ever has worked already right?

The iPod caches to ram until it fills. If you are just listening to a playlist/music, it will only spin up the harddrive every 20-30 minutes to preload again. Technically speaking, there's nothing stopping you from hacking into your ipod, and just putting in more cache memory to give you more time between disc accesses.

What you described is exactly how a regular iPod works. Ever notice how you hear the hard drive spin up when it starts up and then it is silent most of the time? It has 32Mb of flash memory (last I checked, current gen might have more) which can cache about 10 songs (just an estimate).

This support article explains how iPod skip protection works as a result of the caching:

i thought your whole point in having the flash portion was for exercising/working out without damaging it....

but why haven't they increased the buffer to accomadate a larger number of songs?

my point is to have both massive storage and the durability of the flash players by loading as much as possible onto the flash at least while u're working out or whatever.

first of all who carries around video higher than 320x240? neither the zune or ipod can display higher than that, so what's the point? and at 320x240 with a MAX of 768kbps (limit of ipod), you're looking at 2 hours of video at only ~330MB, with 8gb of memory, that's nearly 6 movies and 6gb of music.

what kind of working out do you do where you need 80GB and a screen?

and even if you're thinking having one player for everything, what kind of working out do you do where carrying around what amounts to a brick isn't retardedly inconvenient?

i bought a 60gb vid and a 1 gb nano

covers all my needs

60gb is double what my current music/video needs are, so by the time it's phased out, much better hd or even flash solutions should be avaliable

and the 1 gb nano holds the right amount of songs for me to work out

i guess if youre not bawwwwwwwlinnnnnnnnnn (no jim jones) then maybe this isnt a solution for you, and i did consider the shuffle, esp. the new one, but i like the size of the 1 gen nano on my arm with a screen for just personal pleasure reasons

i have a 20gb iriver and it's perfect to store my entire music collection but since it's hard drive based it's large and cumbersome and takes forever to switch tracks manually

i also have a 2gb nano and find it perfect, takes no time at all to plug it in and drag/drop what i need and go, it's small lightweight and can carry enough music to last the length of the battery life.

i imagine 8gb is a good (getting better) amount of space for music/video, i just can't imagine using 80gb regularly, i mean that's more video/music than the battery life, in fact it would take 30-40 battery charges to fully watch/listen to all the media on that beast

^x5

if you're working out, what difference does 5-6 ounces on your arm matter?

this is along the lines of people who complain about having to walk too far to get to the gym.

background: I first had a 1st gen shuffle and used to run with that. I now have a 5th gen 30gb and run with it.

Doing the same running, it doesn't make a difference to me and I do not feel the added weight.

Do you really think it makes that big of a difference when doing cardio?(curious, not flaming)

^Also not if it means having an extra strap, which rubs your arm raw after an hour.

Maybe you've never seen distance races, where dude's nipples are bleeding from just a tshirt.

u can't use that argument, who really needs music on the go(or more than 1gb of it at least)? i mean are those earbuds really any more than an excuse to be anti social?
