I'm a huge fan of the Cubs and of Samardzija, but damn.

i was just about to make this thread

can't say i wouldn't have done the same thing if i was in samardzija's shoes, he's built more like a pitcher than an NFL wideout

and maybe he just doesn't feel like having to take 30 minutes to get out of bed every morning later on in his career

and the cubs are the cubs as much as i hate their fanbase, so if he makes to the big leagues, he'll get the exposure and fame and all that - not that he doesn't already have 'glamour boy' written all over him

Smart move. Most NFL players retire with almost unbearable pain.

he's got a better shot at being good in the NFL than he does at being a successful starting pitcher.

^ guaranteed contracts, exposure of one of the big market clubs, and all the trim he can handle.. signing a nice contract with a chance to be in MLB is a great gig to have.

^^ but he can make similar money without ever making the pros in baseball and won't have to destroy his body either.

What's the rule about baseball clubs drafting a team, then that player going to college?

A player that is drafted then goes to college has to spend so much time in college... the player loses his scholarship... the club [has to?] pay for his schooling... ?

This is so smart.

He'll work like 1 every 5 days, have virtually ZERO pain compared to a football player, and will practically owns the Cubs.

I can't fathom why Pat White (WVU quarterback who was offered millions by the Angels) didn't do the same thing.

For baseball, you can get drafted without being told prior to (see: Joey Devine's piece a few years back). Just as long as "no professional contract is signed, no agent is signed/contacted, and receive no compensation* based on performance or status as professional athlete", you can keep your Amateur status. The only one who can negotiate with a MLB team, and let you still keep your eligibility, is your parent or guardian (even if over 21).

* Other than playing apparel, equipment and actual and necessary travel, and room and board expenses

Tryout Before Enrollment: A student-athlete remains eligible in a sport even though, prior to enrollment in a collegiate institution, the student-athlete may have tried out with a professional athletics team in a sport or received not more than one expense-paid visit from each professional team (or a combine including that team), provided such a visit did not exceed 48 hours and any payment or compensation in connection with the visit was not in excess of actual and necessary expenses. A self-financed tryout maybe for any length of time.

^^ Well, obviously.

From from a "smarts" standpoint, it was dumb. Just like Brian Brohn returning for his senior year w/ a new coach is dumb. Just one injury could screw him out of millions.

Just can't let these opportunities fly by.

his hair is anti-black ... what are you talking about ?

that's as close to black as I can find ... and even then "jet" is not the adjective I'd use, his teeth look decent as well.
