Tim Lewis, a former defensive coordinator with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants, has been named secondary coach of the Carolina Panthers, the team announced Friday. A 12-year NFL coaching veteran, Lewis also played four seasons for the Green Bay Packers.

"Tim's experience as both a player and coach in the NFL provide him with a sound knowledge of the defensive backfield," said Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox. "Our staff is familiar with him, and we think he will make a strong contribution to our defense."

After coaching defensive backs at Southern Methodist from 1989-92 and the University of Pittsburgh from 1993-94, Lewis began his NFL coaching career with Pittsburgh as the secondary coach in 1995. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2000, and the Steelers proceeded to finish seventh in the NFL in total defense. A year later, Pittsburgh ranked first in the League in total defense, first against the run and fourth against the pass.

Lewis went to New York as defensive coordinator in 2004, and the Giants allowed 40 fewer points than the previous season. He helped the Giants reach the postseason the last two years as their run defense improved from 28th to 12th from 2004 to 2005.

A cornerback at the University of Pittsburgh from 1979-82, Lewis was a second team All-American as a senior before being selected in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft by Green Bay. He played in 51 games for the Packers and finished his career with 16 interceptions, twice leading or sharing the team lead in interceptions. Lewis' 99-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Rams in 1984 was then a team record.[b]"
