Release: 01/25/2007

NC State head football coach Tom O’Brien has completed his coaching staff with the addition of two more coaches. Andy McCollum, the former head coach at Middle Tennessee State University, will coach the linebackers, while Mike Reed, who has spent the past five seasons in the NFL will coach the defensive backs.

“Both of these coaches bring unique experiences to our staff,” said O’Brien. “Andy McCollum is the second assistant to join us here that has Division I head coaching experience, while Mike Reed is a bright young coach who has been in the NFL for five years. I’m glad to have our complete staff in place and am confident that each coach has the same goal that I do for NC State football: to produce champions in the classroom, in the community and on the football field.”

McCollum guided the MTSU program from 1999-2005 as it made the transition from a struggling I-AA squad to a successful Division 1-A program that competed against BCS opponents 22 times during his tenure. A 23-year veteran of the coaching ranks, he also spent time on the staffs at Baylor and UTEP.

Reed has spent the past five seasons on the Philadelphia Eagles’ coaching staff, working with the defense and special teams. In his seven years in the coaching ranks, Reed also served as an assistant coach at the University of Richmond and in the European leagues."

23 years in coaching

Andy McCollum, the second former Division IA head coach to join Tom O’Brien’s staff at NC State, will coach the Wolfpack linebackers. The head coach at Middle Tennessee State University for seven seasons, McCollum is a 23-year veteran of the coaching ranks.

Prior to spending last season as a scout for the Tennesee Titans, McCollum guided the MTSU program from 1999-2005 as it made the transition from a struggling I-AA squad to a successful Division 1-A program that competed against BCS opponents 22 times during his tenure. In 2000, he led the Blue Raiders to their first winning season as a I-A program. His 2001 offense ranked fifth nationally, while the defense ranked ninth in 2005. In 2002, 2004 and 2005 he brought in the top recruiting classes in the Sun Belt Conference and he was a two-time Tennessee Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year (2000 and 2001).

Prior to being named the head coach at MTSU, McCollum spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Baylor University. He started out as the linebacker and special teams coach in 1994, was named the associate head coach in 1994 and took over the defensive coordinator duties in 1995.

The 47-year-old spent five seasons at UTEP from 1989-93, coaching wide receivers and then linebackers. He was an assistant coach at MTSU from 1984-88, coaching the defensive secondary for three years, the running backs for two years and the special teams for all five years.

McCollum was a four-year starter at Austin Peay State University, playing offensive guard on the team that won the 1977 OVC Championship and then spending the next three years at tight end. He led the team in receptions in 1979 and was an honorable mention all-conference performer as a senior.

He graduated from Austin Peay in 1981 and earned his master’s from MTSU in 1983.

Seven years in coaching

Mike Reed comes to NC State to coach the defensive secondary after spending the last five seasons in the NFL. For the last four campaigns, Reed served as a defensive assistant and quality control coach for the Philadelpia Eagles and in 2002 worked with that team’s defensive backs and special teams.

During his tenure in Philadelphia, Reed assisted the defensive coordinator in creating and editing the defensive playbook and weekly game plans, scouted opponents, and worked with the linebackers and special teams coaches. In 2002, he worked with the defensive secondary.

Prior to his stint with the Eagles, Reed spent two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Richmond, where he worked with the wide receivers, tight ends and defensive backs.

Reed began his coaching career on the professional level, spending six months in 2000 coaching for the Kiel Hurricanes of the German Professional Football League. He not only coached the defensive backs for that club, but also headed up the team’s off-season speed and conditioning program.

A four-year starter at cornerback for Boston College from 1990-93, Reed was a first-team All-ECAC and second-team All-Big East performer in 1993. He was a team captain as a senior in 1994 and earned preseason All-America honors twice during his career. After graduating from BC in 1994 with a degree in communications/general education, Reed was taken in the seventh round of the 1995 NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers, where he spent two seasons.

Following his time with the Panthers, Reed competed with NFL Europe as a member of the Frankfurt Galaxy, where he was team captain of the 1999 World Bowl Championship team.
