NO WAI!

Steve Nash still isn't the best player in the NBA, but he is playing better than he has the last two years, and he won the MVP those two years, SO THEREFORE HE SHOULD BE THE MVP AGAIN!!!

The Lakers are 27-15, despite a supporting cast that could best be described as "mediocre." Bryant also leads the Lakers in assists.

With respects to LeBron, Dirk, Arenas, Wade, and everyone else, Kobe is the best player alive right now.

I agree, Kobe for MVP.

i love reading comments like this...not only does it show extreme exaggeration of actual stats based on stereotypical hearsay, but he doesnt even take the time to check out the standings and see that the Lakers have overperformed this year

now if the Suns keep winning (they currently have a FIFTEEN GAME WINNING STREAK), then you cant really argue Nash...he leads the league in assists by far, shoots fucking 50% from behind the arc (with over 100 3pters made) and definitely makes his team better...although if they didnt have Amare they wouldnt be able to get past Dallas or San Antonio

I attribute a lot of LA's success this year to Phil Jackson...very underrated coach...lots of people seem to think he wouldnt be worth a shit without either MJ or Shaq/Kobe...he is proving this year that he is a great coach

please understand the NBA. He's shooting less this year, averaging more assists this year. AND Odom isn't playing so he's getting lesser quality teammates involved this year.

Haha okay now I don't follow the NBA even though I believe Nash deserved it the last two years. I guess the people that vote on that kind of shit don't know what they are talking about either.

Right now it should be:
1) Nash
2) Dirk
3) Arenas-talk about doing something with less, other than Jamison and Butler this is a team of misfits.
4) Kobe, there I said it, he belongs in the talks but is still behind the others.

he's arguably the best player, mainly because he has a title (although he wouldnt have gotten it without Big Aristotle)

but he's missed a good 5-10 games and the Heat have NOT been playing up to expectation (though again they've been playing without Shaq and some without Wade)

thats the same logic for why Malone won an MVP over Jordan. MJ was the best player AGAIN that season, but the media and voters were tired of His Airness winning, so they went with option B.

I remember that. Same thing happened in '93. They gave the MVP to Barkley after Jordan had won it the previous two years, even though Jordan was clearly the best player again. Jordan destroyed both Barkley and Malone in the finals those two years.

Arenas should clearly get this. ITS MVP NOT BP. I can't emphasize that enough. Being a Bullets/Wizards fan my whole life, Arenas is the only thing this team has. Jamison is only good because of him and Butler has stepped his game into that Pippen type of role. Arenas makes those around him better.

Not to argue that Nash doesn't do the same thing, but when you have players like Marion and Stoudemire to work with now, the rest of that team is nice too.

I guess what Im trying to say is that if you take Nash away from PHX, they'll still be an okay team, if you take Arenas away from Washington, they'll be pure trash.

This is the way I like to look at the MVP. The "Most Valuable Player", to me that means which team would be the worst without their best player.

Take Nash away from the Suns, they still make the playoffs.
Take Dirk away from the Mavs, they still make the playoffs.
Same with Wade and Duncan.

So now we're down to Arenas and Kobe, KG, and in any other year Iverson. You can hate on Iverson all you want but without him the Sixers would have been in the lottery every single year, put him on the Suns they would have won the championship, put Nash on the Sixer's they might have made the playoffs.

So who's better between Arenas and Kobe? Arenas has been balling it up lately, but Kobe is still the best player in the world, plus he plays in the West.

I'm going with Kobe.

I'm a Laker lover, but I can't put it on Kobe yet until the rest of the season pans out.

Arenas is playing at an MVP level, but nobody from the East should get the MVP. Would be a travesty. Wizards aren't even considered one of the top two teams in the East (Miami (when healthy) and Detroit)

You can't be in the middle of the Eastern Conference standings (especially since the East is sooooo bad) and expect to be picked MVP before Nash/Dirk/Kobe/etc...

what if you're the 2nd seed in the East like the Wizards are?

^^^troo.

To all the people who make the claim of "It's supposed to be Most Valuble Player, not Best Player, so it has to be Nash, durrrrr," I would argue this: Take Nash away from the Suns and replace him with Jason Kidd, Tony Parker, maybe even guys like Mike Bibby or Chris Paul, and they're the exact same team (allowing for time for the team to mesh and all). You could even put an average point guard on a team with Stoudamire, Marion, and the others, and they would still be a really good team, and said average point guard would probably have stats comparable to Nash's. That's not value when a guy is replaceable with other players of the same position. That's called being in the right place at the right time. You ever wonder why Steve Nash always has that smile on his face?

Now, replace, Kobe, Dirk, LeBron, Arenas, or Wade with an average player, and you'd see an enormous dropoff in production of their team.

Arenas should be disqualified from the MVP race simply because of those horrendous gold uniforms of the Wizards.

theres a big difference in saying "replace Kobe with an average player" and "replace Nash with Kidd"

replace Kobe or Arenas with Wade and they SHOULD be 'just as good'

2nd in the East is as good as 7th in the West.

We all know that only half the season is done, and that there is still much basketball to be played. No point in arguing this until a good 65-70 games are through.

^^so Arenas should have to do like 1.5x as well as other players to get MVP consideration because other teams in his conference suck? doesnt seem very fair to me

Arenas shouldnt win it over Nash at this point in the season

but Nash will have to sit out with his bad back before to long and then Kobe and Gilbert can move up

Who said that the MVP voting is fair?

Most basketball analysts would make conference strength a determining factor in the MVP race.

Right now the Wiz are 8-8 against the West. If they can amass a .550 percentage against the West (not too difficult either), then I would say that there shouldn't be a bias based on conference.

Just to clarify, this is what I actually said:

Quote :
"You could even put an average point guard on a team with Stoudamire, Marion, and the others, and they would still be a really good team, and said average point guard would probably have stats comparable to Nash's."

That was my point. Maybe "comparable stats" was too strong a phrase. But certainly an average PG on the Suns team would have very good stats.

Gilbert Arenas is having a better season than kobe this year.

Kobe's numbers

FG%: .471 Rebounds: 5.4 Assists: 5.5 Steals: 1.28 TO: 3.38 PPG: 28.3

Arenas' numbers

FG%: .431 Rebounds: 4.5 Assists: 6.2 Steals: 1.98 TO: 3.54 PPG: 29.7

Arenas is dishing the ball more and playing better defense than Kobe and scoring more than Kobe. Arenas also has less to work with than kobe does.
