they would need to pay me 200,000 to work over there, but the only thing I'd be good at would be stealing motorcycles... The only equivalent over there are mules and asses... Those are pretty high maintenance...

hell I'd love to do this shit. to bad I'm not really a mechanic.

that also seems a little on the low end of what most contractors over there make.

and expendable...

bbr: Dude... I'd do so much shit in Iraq because all of the lawlessness in that country. Shit, I'd make my own bullet proof suit/armor, buy the fn f2000, and enough ammo to start ww3. I'd be field mechanic/bike stealer... :p

It pays low because its on a Military base.

You're not going to be outside running patrol.

I liked when they tried to recruit IT people. That was funny. I need to see if I can find that email. That guy would not give up.

Job paid like $110,000 for doing networking etc. but no matter how many times I asked he would not tell me WHERE. Fuck that.

I know an IT guy who's working in Iraq. Used to work in my department. Emailed us about his adventures over there. He's been shot at a few times he says. But, he's still alive. He knows of another guy who was killed. Crazy stuff, I wouldn't do it. Doesn't matter if you paid me triple digits or not.

seriously.

You can make that easily stateside (assuming we're not talking entry level here)

Just because you're on base doesn't necessarily mean it's safe. I have a cousin who is firefighting on base as a civilian contractor over there. All the fires that he has to put out are from rockets coming into the base and blowing stuff up.

I've also heard stories of contractors being placed in the least safe housing on base (i.e. most easily accessible to the rocket fire or whatever.)

That $86k would be tax free as long as you spend enough weeks out of the year over there. I guess that makes it like earning $110-120k over here. I'm sure that is 4+ years pay for most of those guys, but I don't think I'd want to spend a year in the desert for $86k.

You can make the same $$$ in the oil fields of Canada and not be dodging rockets and bullets.

my parent's neighbor is over there working for a contractor and was telling me how they have him living in one of those big shipping containers. But it is pretty close to the wall and he narrowly avoided a mortar on morning when he was coming out of his door.

One of my coworkers brothers quit the local city police as a LT. to go work for Blackwater in Kuwait. He lives in a little room over there, but all he does is train guys on automatic weapons and shit all day. And he makes about $200k/year. He's already pulled about 2 years, and is going to do another 2-3 I think.

I'd live in a shipping container as long as it has lights, internet, and plumbing over here...
