my little brother's birthday is coming up and he reads even more than i do...he recently got into fantasy/sci-fi kind of stuff and so i'd like to buy him a dozen books or so keep him busy for a few months

i read the wheel of time series after he suggested and it was pretty good IMO...i like george rr martin a little better, though

anyway, suggest some similar books...he's read:

wheel of time (robert jordan)
sword of truth (terry goodkind)
farseer trilogy (robin hobb)

i have suggested he read...i'll probably get him some of these, but my experience is limited

song of ice and fire (george rr martin)
liveship traders trilogy (robin hobb)
tawny man trilogy (robin hobb)

any other suggestions?

any of the series by Raymond E Feist, but i think the first series starts with the book Magician. other series take place in the same universe and feature characters from various generations later, but the characters from Magician reoccur through all the series, so that's the best place to start.

the runelords trilogy - the first two are awesome and the third is eh

the book of swords series was good too until it got all techie

the shannara series stuff too

Lords of the North, Last Kingdom, Pale Horseman
all by Bernard Cornwell. pretty good. if he reads wheel of time he will probably read all 3 in about 4 days.

Warn him that if he reads A Song of Ice and Fire all other fantasy will be ruined for him. Well, at least for me Sword of Truth sucked as well as Wheel of Time, but WOT redeemed itself with the release of Knife of Dreams.

Hyperion and Enymion series by Dan Simmons (Hyperion, Fall of Hyperion, Endymion, Rise of Endymion.) Some of the best books I've ever read.

^If you liked those, pick up his newer duo Illium and Olympos. It combines some of the same cool sci-fi stuff of the Hyperion series with Greek mythology circa the Trojan war.

Tad Williams's Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy is really good for fantasy reading.

Yeah I read those recently. They were definately good, if a bit weird at times. I liked the Hyperion series better though. I think the ending flowed more naturally from the story than the ending of olympos.

the Taltos novels by Steven Brust. they're shorter and somewhat standalone, but pretty good.

Best recommendation in the whole thread. They aren't similar to the Wheerl of Time at all, which is what is great about them. Pretty different than the run of the mill fantasy crap. Not great writing, but tons of kickass and quick reads. Like I said, opposite of wheel of time, which may be what he needs instead of more LOTR style clones.
