Quote : | " Dear BumpTop fans,
More than three years ago, we set out to completely change the way people use their desktops. We're very grateful for all your support over that time — not just financially but also through all the encouraging messages from people who found BumpTop inspiring, useful, and just downright fun.
Today, we have a big announcement to make: we're excited to announce that we've been acquired by Google! This means that BumpTop (for both Windows and Mac) will no longer be available for sale. Additionally, no updates to the products are planned.
For the next week, we're keeping BumpTop Free available for download at bumptop.com/download to give BumpTop fans one last chance to grab a copy.
Existing BumpTop Pro users should visit bumptop.com/pro for more information.
Thanks again for all your support over the years. Despite our change in strategy, we remain as passionate as ever about helping shape the future of computing!" |

what a terribly useless design pattern. 5/3/2010 1:19:37 AM |

That's an interesting novelty, but not one that translates well into the virtual realm. My actual desk is messy because I'm lazy, not because of any innate need to be disorganized. I enjoy that my computer organizes my files automatically, keeps track of them and holds them in the folders I tell them to live in.
Also, identifying items that are in piles is aided by using sophisticated visual cues about the minute details of an item almost instantaneously. That crucial feature for usability is lost as soon as your virtual desktop displays any file of the same type with an identical icon.

At no point in time did I look at this and think it would make my life any easier. It is certainly a cool idea, but not anything practical.
I'm sure someone much smarter then me will come up with a usage for it though. 5/3/2010 6:46:58 AM |

Not very practical, not even that good looking. I have a touchscreen windows 7 machine, and I still do not see it much much more than a novelty item. Also, it has graduated a prototype stage verly long ago, and even ships with some HP machines IIRC 5/3/2010 7:33:21 AM |

^ yeah same here. I can't stand having shit on my desktop.
I only use it as a very temporary place to put files, and delete/move them ASAP. 5/3/2010 10:27:50 AM |
