I don't know jack about satellite service. My dad wants to get satellite service. He wants DVR in one room and TV in 2 others. We're trying to figure out what lines need to be run from where. As I understand it, we need 4 lines running from the dish(dishes?) to the inside of the house... one to each TV. You can't run one line into the house and split it 11ty billion times like with cable, right?

Ok I think I found the answer. Apparently we would need a Dual-LNB dish connected to a Multi-Switch. Then a line would be run from the multi-switch to each of the TVs (and 2 to the DVR box).

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also... can 2 of the output signals from the Multi-Switch using a diplexer, connect the output of the diplexer to the coax line to the room that's getting the DVR and then connect another diplexer in the DVR room to split the lines again?

a dual LNB dish has two outputs. You can plug those two outputs in to a multiswitch that has 4-16 (they may even go higher) outputs. Each of those outputs goes to one tuner. The dvr gets two inputs because it has two tuners.

Some dishes (the 3lnb HD dishes for example) have a built in multiswitch and 4 outputs. you can run one to each tuner, or you can run two to your multiswitch again.

A diplexer will not allow you to combine two satellite lines in to one. A diplexer is for combining a satellite signal with a cable or antenna signal, then splitting it again at the tuner so that you have satellite in and cable in with only one cable in the wall.

I have dish network with 2 tuner dvr and I'm running both satellite signals and a diplexer on one coax. If it's a shorter run (almost any house setup) it should work just fine.

there is some type of splitter/switch on the back besides the diplexer that runs the signal to both sat1 and sat2

^ no the diplexer is seperate. I pulled it out and looked at it earlier today. I have one coax coming from the satellite to my dual tuner dvr and going to my other TV's in the house. I'll draw it out.

do tv1, 2, 3 have satellite or just cable/antenna channels?

i'm sure they make boxes that will combine two satellite lines in to one. that is what the second box does. the diplexer combines and splits satellite with antenna or cable tv.

however, a diplexer will not combine or split two satellite signals in to one.

My TV 1 goes to the main TV
all other TV's share the TV2 signal and are broadcast on channel 63(?). It works for now since there is only 2 of us that watch TV

ok, i get it now. what you have is not what the original poster wants.

you've got two satellite lines going to the dual dvr receiver (or a single line with a dish splitter which is NOT the same as a diplexer). The dual dvr has two outputs. one output goes to the main tv, the other output goes to the diplexer which is sent back over the satelllite line to the other diplexer where it is separated out, sent through a splitter and to the other three tvs. Once it comes out TV2 from the dual dvr it is basically an antenna/cable signal which can be combined with a satellite signal via a diplexer.

also, that dish splitter is only compatible with Dish Network and only with certain dishes on dish network. It would not work with directv.
