... but if you'd have ever seen the original JC Superstar, I know you'd agree that Anderson > Keitel.

still, i'll give Keitel honors for Best South Bronx Judas.

I have seen it. I still like Keitel better- he's more interesting. Less flamboyant and tortured, and I enjoy the idea of Judas being so close that he's loyal rather than a betrayer.

um, i think that was the point of JC Superstar's Judas too. are you sure you were paying attention?

and yeah, i guess its flamboyant. but what would you expect from an Andrew Lloyd Weber musical.

But he ends up choosing the betrayal. He does use "Damned For All Time" as a "please don't blame me! *whine*" song, but that hardly makes him decide to not turn Jesus in. He thinks it'd be better to turn him in before his following gets really out of control- that's something he decides for himself. He claims he's turning in Jesus unselfishly, and then they offer him the money for charity's sake to appease him. In the end, he just feels extremely guilty and hangs himself.

In Last Temptation, Jesus tells Judas to turn him in. Judas refuses initially, but out of a greater loyalty to Jesus, obliges- it pains him just as much, but he makes a willing sacrifice. It takes the sting out of a true betrayal.

They both have consciences- there's no debating that. I enjoy the obedience of the latter instead of the overwrought guilt of the former because it brings up an interesting issue in regards to Judas' guilt. Carl Anderson is probably a much better singer, too.

^^^ Hmm. great points. you know, I just can't argue with any of that. I also think LToC's Judas, as a character, is more compelling because like you said it raises the larger issue of assigning blame or guilt. I think LToC is more accurate to the historical figures -- as best as anyone can tell -- at least how Ive always imagined it... but of course I also believe the gnostic Gospel of Judas is closer to the truth than the early christian heresy hunters would have liked me to believe. LToC is a great movie, and Nikolai Kazantzakos' book is even better. I need to dig that one up again.

I guess I prefer Anderson's performance precisely because it is flamboyant, tortured, overdramatic. which was the point of the musical and movie. Keitel, as an actor, played his character in a more understated manner.

and, yeah, Anderson is a better singer.

so it's just preference.
