Wow, didn't see this until now...they're also at the Birchmere.
I saw them once at the Ritz and they were great. I didn't realize they were still making music--and the picture on their website looks like the original members are all back. 1/29/2007 3:12:45 PM |

do they have any other notable songs other than "hell"?
andddd, do all of their songs sound the same as "hell"? 1/29/2007 3:20:06 PM |

^ Yes. And no, some of them are different. Songs like "Blue Angel" don't sound like "Hell" at all.
"Put A Lid On It" is a fun song.

^^ they don't all "sound like" hell, but they are mostly all big-band/jazz/swing sounding. That's just their style

thats more of what I meant, if that "sound" was/is their style, not a gimmicky song they used to get on the radio 1/29/2007 3:38:22 PM |

here's a post i made a while back in the 'upcoming concerts' thread
--
here's an excerpt from the N&O article
Quote : | "If Maxwell and Mosher are carrying on in the style of their old band, they're not calling themselves Squirrel Nut Zippers. Whalen and Mathus still own the name -- and they're actually talking about playing together again as the Zippers, without Maxwell and Mosher.
After all that has happened, Mathus acknowledges it would be "awkward, but no more awkward than anything else." The motivation would be financial, to pay off their debt to Maxwell and Mosher.
"We wouldn't be trying to re-form the group to make records and get on the radio," Whalen says. "It would be more about us surviving. The idea would be to do maybe three shows, probably just a couple of corporate gigs for some money. We'll be paying off that settlement for two more years, so it would be cool to play a few nights and just make that go away."" |
from http://www.newsobserver.com/105/story/439524.html
so no idea if maxwell/mosher are gonna be with them, though maxwell's son has been diagnosed with leukemia and according to his site, he and mosher are doing benefit shows to try to pay the hospital bills
---
i don't see maxwell and mosher in that pic on their site...so i'm guessing it's not the full band
oh and i tend to gravitate more to their 1910s-1930s stuff more so than the 'big band' stuff they do1/29/2007 7:57:02 PM |

They rocked the house. I was very excited that they played Prince Nez and Low Down Man.
Which Magnetic Fields song did they play? I caught that it was off 69 love songs, but can't figure out which song it was. ] 2/9/2007 1:25:27 AM |

Oh wow, great show! Prince Nez, Wash Jones, and The Ghost of Stephen Foster were definitely the highlights for me. The opening band, Old Ceremony, was pretty good, too. I ended up picking up both their cds. 2/9/2007 1:27:28 AM |
