Quote : | "SOCIAL workers are placing obese children on the child protection register alongside victims thought to be at risk of sexual or physical abuse.
In extreme cases children have been placed in foster care because their parents have contributed to the health problems of their offspring by failing to respond to medical advice.
The intervention of social services in what was previously regarded as a private matter is likely to raise concerns about the emergence of the “fat police”.
Some doctors even advocate taking legal action against parents for illtreating their children by feeding them so much that they develop health problems." |
The article makes some good points about why these kids should be taken from their parents.
What do you think about this? Should the government be able to take fat kids from fat enabling parents?1/29/2007 4:10:54 PM |

Quote : | "“These are children suffering from sleep apnoea and serious health complications from diabetes. Initially, social workers try to help the parents but, in some cases, the parents are the problem.”" |

good thought, but too much gov intervention......it would be better to offer some kind of benefit for routine preventitive health care visits for children or something. I hate seeing gov intervention in things like this. 1/29/2007 4:46:23 PM |

if the benefit of being able to keep your kid doesnt keep parents following through on preventative health care visits i dont know what you are expecting to work. they arent going to take kids away just because they are fat, they will take them if they are obese and parents are not following the doctors orders. 1/29/2007 4:52:28 PM |

no, because then the government would dole out some subsidy for people who weighed more than, say, 300lbs and make the skinny people pay for it, so the skinny people would be paying for the laziness of the fat people...fatware

Maybe they could develop a "Food Offenders' List" Once convicted of feeding your child too much, you would have to register with your local dept of health. They could put a ankle locator on you, and you would have to stay at least 500 feet away from all fast-food joints.
You would have to take your children to the dept of health each week and have them weighed. If they go one ounce over the legal limit, you go back to the slammer. And we know how much the other prisoners hate "Over-Feeders"1/29/2007 10:47:04 PM |

but so does real life - much much worse than a PE class ever could. 1/30/2007 1:15:27 PM |

^ I wish I could agree with you on that except that there are enough documented instances where competitive sports are being eliminated or toned down at schools for that exact reason. Won't say its a majority, probably just a fringe, but it's happened. 1/30/2007 1:32:35 PM |

Ok, I searched and found PE classes being eliminated because of cost constraints, I found others being closed because of mental health reasons, and some others that just eliminated competitive athletics during PE, but I didn't find a single one that was shut down "because conservatives don't want their white daughters sweating with black boys." How certain are you of this last one? 1/30/2007 2:21:51 PM |

Just pointing out that silly strawmen can go both ways.
Generally PE classes have been cut for 2 main reasons: 1. funding 2. standards/curriculum (No Child Left Behind and similar acts have gotten more demanding in other areas, while ignoring PE) 1/30/2007 2:40:08 PM |

i don't care why they were cut. I just find it funny that the fat police thing is coming about during the same time period when physical education is being cut all over the country.

I'm simmered.
I just get tired of people trashing the cult of self-esteem. Yeah, they're lame, but every time I turn around there's someone bitching about a few people, who--OMG!--want children to feel good about themselves even when they suck.
Show me a compelling relationship between the cult of self-esteem and, say, a rise in prison populations and I'll get on board with the bitching. As it is, I'm not gonna waste my breath on a few people who want to tell Johnny he's a talented artist when really Johnny's hand turkeys suck balls.

^ .. which is why it is so evilly entertaining watchhing the early episodes of American Idol. Some of these kids have been told by family and friends for years how talented they are. They walk into the audition in a fog of undeserved bravado.
And then reality hits them in the form of callous professionals snickering at them as they sing. The look of shock on their faces is priceless. 1/30/2007 4:23:19 PM |

I was going to make this thread one day last week, when I heard ole Bortz talking about a mom with a child (seemed like he was younger than 10) weighing 250 pounds or something and they (child services?) were threatening to take him away.
He was saying stuffing your kids face so full that he is obese before 10 is no different than beating him, and I have to agree.3/29/2007 10:54:14 AM |

So you are fine with having to pay increased costs on the back end when these fatties grow up and have endless health problems?
I suppose we cut off that support too.
Well there goes work output and growth in the country.
Well, I suppose we can just farm it out to other countries since there workers aren't fat and are more willing to do hard work.
Well then you're fucked again.
Face it. A nation has a HIGHLY vested interest in having healthy citizens. And lets face it, our genetics would much rather us eat eat eat than to go out and do physical work. 3/29/2007 2:47:16 PM |
