Preface: I know that there are other threads on HDTV's, but I need help specifically about this one.

I know that it's not the best, but for $699, it seems like a bargain.

This brand is not well known like Samsung or Sony, but they have actually been around for quite some time.

Does anyone know anything about this brand and/or model, or have a reason that I shouldnt buy it?

It's gotten good ratings on cnet.com, so I think it may be ok.

Again, for $699, I dont mind losing some of the bells and whistles, but I dont want to get a complete dud either.

Any help is great.

If you can do without a tuner I'd go for the 37" 1080p but it is a little more expensive ~1000$

that tv is fine, you don't need a tuner, unless you plan on getting an antenna. but i'm assuming you'll be getting twc's hd service, which will give you an hd box.

my parents bought the westinghouse 42" 720p for $1000, which is also on sale for that price right now. it has been wonderful and they love it. the picture quality is great.

I'm just saying 32" is kinda small if it's for your main viewing purpose. If you view 4:3 content it'll effectively be about 26".

For 300 bucks more I find it hard not justifying either getting the 42" for a much larger screen, or the 37" for a larger screen and 1080p resolution.

But if 32" is really big enough then go for it I guess.

how often would I have to view things in 4:3?

I really know nothing about this stuff, regardsless of how many different reviews and things that I read. I need this input so the Best Buy guy doesnt ass rape me this Saturday. I've been duped in there so many times, letting them talk me into the upgrades that total $2-400.

Also, how do I know if this TV will autofit the television shows? In other words, will normal programming be stretched out and make things like football players look short and fat?

whats the feature that controls that? Damn, I wonder if this TV even has that at all.

This is frustrating.

stupid 16:9, the 32" 4:3 I have is so nice for a cheap main tv. Too bad I'm never satisfied (though I guess for 800-1k I could get a decent sized DLP, but I don't want to buy another table or take up the space).

I don't know how much you'll be viewing 4:3 content but I know I view it alot. Just depends on what you're watching. All SD (standard definition) channels are going to be 4:3 and you will have to choose to either stretch them to 16:9 or have black bars on the sides and watch it in 4:3 at 26" diag. If you have direct TV and an HD package this won't be an issue for most sports as ABC/TNT/ESPN etc broadcast in HD/16:9.

I think Westinghouse LCD's only have a native display resolution setting, a stretch to fit setting, and a/some zoom settings. Some 16:9 tv's allow you to stretch your content from 4:3 to 16:9 by using some sort of algorithm that will keep the center portion of your picture unstretched for the most part and stretch the edges more and extrapolate a little outside. This allows a full screen picture with less visible distortions. I don't believe this one has a feature like that though.

The remote for the TV will have a toggle between the settings. The zoom feature can be handy for DVD's that output in 4:3 aspect but were recorded in 16:9 (really annoying). The DVD playing is outputing a 4:3 picture that has black bars on the top and bottom and the video is actually 16:9. The zoom lets you enlarge the picture to where the black bars will be outside of your viewing area and the 16:9 video is (hopefull) full screen unstretched (technically its stretched but equally in X/Y so no distortion).

I have this exact TV and I have been really happy with it, mine has a tuner for sure. I only paid $500 at bestbuy though.

Well "cheap" is the right word....why would you buy such a thing? Do not let someone convince you to go 4:3 on an HDTV purchase because youll watch more stuff in 4:3 anyhow, because youre going to lose a lot of that resolution when you watch any HD programming. There are some that will argue that these TVs are just as good as any 16:9 display, but they are wrong.

online, just look. most are 800ish for cheap olevia, viewsonic, and other brands.

^^ wah, i got it a year ago for a couple hundred bucks. works great, looks nice, and will probably outlast someone elses plasma or lcd. it isnt the best tv, but 360 still looked nice and it was good for a small apartment. best of all they dont cost 1000+.

so if you are really hurtin on cash, dont be scared to explore other options, be it a cheap widescreen crt, regular crt, etc. you can get them mad cheap as ppl dump them for other stuff.

I have a 50' dlp and started watching normal things in stretch mode. the pic was horrible.
If you have direct tv do you also have DVR???? make sure you get a deal. If you jew then down enough you can get the box free and just pay 19.99 shipping.

Is there no way around the ugly stretch mode thing? We watch alot of normal TV (on DirectTV) but I dont want it all to look like shit.

What specs should I be looking for that wouldl give me more info about this?

If you watch mainly 4:3 content, you should get a 4:3 TV unless you have a reason not to.

Getting an overpriced TV with a shitty scaler just so that the 10% of the time you do watch something in HD it will look good is ridiculous. You should buy based on your viewing habits.

That's a good argument for a projector. Costs less and you can use a normal TV most times and a projector for movies and games. Depends on the room too I guess.

I would get a widescreen tv, getting a new one, since HDTV should become more and more common.

Projectors are nice, but they're not the most practical thing to have in a living room if you care at all about the picture quality and black level while still maintaining the room as a living room.

Then again, if you have an LCD projector you're pretty much fucked from the start, so you can just throw it anywhere.

if you have direct tv and dvr when you upgrade to HD you will get the HR20. there a option to use stretch, pillar, crop, whatever you want. Stretch is just a option on many tv's. I would just advise not using it

I have this TV and I'm enjoying it. It serves it's purpose until I get out of my current living situation. I have this TV in my bedroom at the moment and couldn't be happier. The $700 price tag can't be beat for a 32" LCD. I'm planning on using it as a computer monitor when I get to a new place and upgrading to a 50" DLP 1080p or so.
