We are puppy sitting a mini schnauzer. We've had him all of 2 hours and he's vomiting and wobbling and drooling and can't walk straight. We think he drank too much water. What else could be wrong with this little guy? He's been pooping/peeing on his master for a couple of weeks and in his crate.

Should we take him to the emergency vet?
I don't know anything about dogs btw.

Any advice?

Call an emergency vet, they'll tell you to either come straight in, or give you better advice than you'll find here. NCSU Vet school is amazing with emergency pet things btw.

Probably a good idea to call the owner too.

Sounds like what happens sometimes when you put flea treatments on an animal too soon. I bet the owners washed and flea dipped him before they left so he would be "clean" for you all, and he was having a reaction to the chemicals.

PSA for everyone: Just because the label says it's puppy safe, doesn't mean it really is. Talk to your vet first always.

To all you smartasses --

I actually got really good advice from a fellow wolfwebber who owns a small dog and has experienced this before (why I made the thread).

Vomiting could have been from the shampoo they bathed him in before he left and he drank too much water. Then he was probably scared or cold or both which explains the shaking. The wobbling was from being too tired! This dog is like a baby.

Overall I saved the owners a trip to the emergency vet because he's normal today.

Thanks to those who tried to help!

^^^ all the symptoms you described sounded like my dog when she's having/had a seizure... so, those symptoms could have been caused by the things you described, or the puppy may be showing signs of epilepsy or poisoning or low blood sugar. so, they def. need to keep a close eye on him..

Just because he looks "Fine now" doesn't mean he coudln't have gotten some internal damage and is not showing overt signs right now.

Shaking can also be a sign of pain, like with back issues or neurological damage.

I think that was pretty much a given.
I was trying to see if anyone had a similar experience and it wasn't a life threatening issue...which was the advice I actually got and the dog turned out fine.

Don't worry I wouldn't want to dogsit your pup anyway. I felt obligated to sit this one bc the owners had to leave out of town for an emergency late at night. It's not like it's my job.

Plus I said thanks to those who were trying to help without being derogatory.
Perhaps I should have clarified that JoeSchmoe and TreeTwista were the only smartasses but I thought that was also evident.


If you look at the last time I posted that night it's not like I was waiting around online all night. I got the answer I was looking for over IM. I was in the process of getting up with the owner which informed me they gave him a bath earlier and he was probably fine. He's been fine ever since.

I was commenting that this dog was like a baby because he has a certain bedtime and he's so sensitive. They told me they burp him after he eats in the morning.

And of course, had I not got in touch with the owner and I was still scared that something was seriously wrong with it, I would have taken the dog to the emergency vet regardless of the bill they would be surprised with.


One last thing....although I may know nothing about dogs, I am a fantastic mother so leave that part of my life out of your trolling.

maybe I should mention that the advice I got was over IM from a TRUSTED CLOSE FRIEND who also has a small dog that has had the exact same thing happen when their dog drank too much water and she convince me that he was fine and that it was not necessary to take him to the vet and she gave me advice of how to take care of him

I did call the vet..they don't tell you anything over the phone except how much it is to bring him in. I wasn't agaisnt taking him to the vet bc of money, I just didn't know if it was a very critical situation.

I also did a google search for other advice and message boards. I was looking into all of my resouces while I was trying to get ahold of the owners who wouldn't answer their phone. My boyfriend was 2 feet away from me with the dog so it's not like I left in the bathroom to die while I played on TWW. I definitely know better for next time to never come here for a serious answer.

I think that advice from other pet owners is always helpful, but honestly the symptoms you described, whether or not they turned out benign, are quite often indicative of a greater problem, ie. seizures (like my chocolate lab used to have). N

ot to tax the issue, but in the future I highly suggest taking the pup to a vet. Better safe than sorry. How would you have explained the puppy's death to the owners, had the problem actually turned out to be something more than it was?

I’ve heard of dogs (especially puppies) over eating and vomiting (usually for dogs that aren’t free fed or for dogs after surgery who have been fasted), but this is the first time I’ve ever heard of the concept of drinking too much water.

Usually for vomit and diarrhea, at Carrboro Plaza Veterinary Clinic, we tend to recommend a bland diet of chicken and rice, or if you don’t want to put the effort into that, just buy something like the Hill’s I/D (intestinal diet, a premixed bland diet that comes in dry & canned food) or some other companies version of it. That being said, the bring him in advice isn’t bad, you really can’t know what’s going on that well without seeing the pet. Although for people who aren’t ready to bring in a pet yet due to $ concerns, the advice is usually watch whatever the symptom is, if it gets worse or is persistent, bring them in, if it gets better, just make note of it to mention at the next year (or 6 month for seniors over the age of 7) exam.

Even if everything is all said and done, I'd call the vet at a not so busy time of day, and tell them what happened and what you did about it, so that they can update the records and have it in their heads for his next physical check up and vaccines.

I asked the owners once I got them on the phone and they explained his behavior was common after a bath and overeating/drinking. They said to keep an eye on him and if he was acting better not to worry about taking him to the vet. He was shaking bc he was cold after puking in his bed. The dog just hops like a bunny so I thought it was walking crazy. The drool was puke.

I was trying to do a good thing here people. We stayed up all night to make sure he was ok. He was fast asleep, curled up in his little bed I made him. He is still fine. His owners are still gone. I know now not to leave that much water/food laying around for him to gorge himself. I walk this damn dog every 2 hours and I've stepped in dog shit twice with 2 different sneakers.
