That real native american indians have no facial hair?
This is a serious an interesting fact about the genetic makeup of such individuals i feel is overlooked and rather odd.

I was aware that many American Indians have/had little to no facial hair.
It's common knowledge.
And?
I think I'm missing something here.

You don't find that odd? Most people don't know this and claim that, they are in fact 100% Native A, and they have facial hair. 1/31/2007 11:23:14 PM |

Nah, in Pocahontas, there was a song where the American Indians were talking about how weird it was that the Europeans had hair all over them. So I guess I've always known American Indians had little to no body/facial hair. And I never thought it was odd because the information wasn't presented to me in a eurocentric fashion--it was the Indians who thought it was weird that the Europeans had body hair.

I'd imagine it would be possible to be 100 percent American Indian and still have a little facial hair. The unlikeliness of their actually being 100 percent American Indian has nothing to do with their facial hair really.1/31/2007 11:43:10 PM |

there's no 100% pure anything, anywhere.
and there is a huge amount of genetic diversity across the various creeds that make up this loosely-defined group you call Native Americans.
for geneticists and biologist, race is a meaningless term. its purely a social structure. certain groups of people are either more likely or less likely to have characteristic "X" in common, but its purely a function of probability

^^ And geography, which is how the concept of race came to be.
The way race is used though is pretty inaccurate.
Like barack obama is just as black as he is white, be he's identified as being black, or Tiger Woods is just as Vietnamese (or whatever his mom was) as black, be he's called and treated like he's black.
And even white people have distinct cultural and ancestral heritages, but they feel unified in their whiteness (except for Jews, that's always puzzled me a little bit... crazy white people).
