Harrison, Ishua Benjamin, Cornelius Williams. The outcome? An 86-72 State victory. Sure, all of that is history, and none of it had any impact on Saturday's game. Or maybe it did. Carolina played the game like it was the last one they had to get out of the way before going to Duke on Wednesday night. Five or 10 or 15 years from now, we'll list the starting lineups from this game and they'll look just like the above--like a walkover on paper. We're officially back to the days when the State game is a tossup no matter what the relative strength of the two teams competing in the game. Sidney Lowe gets it. He has the same purebred hatred for Carolina that Roy Williams has for State. For the last three seasons, the Tar Heels have thrived on Williams's passion because there wasn't an equal amount of emotion coming from Raleigh. That's over now. No one has any idea what kind of success Lowe will have at State, whether he'll be there for five years or 50 years. But for every single one of those years, he will burn to beat Carolina. If you're Carolina coming into Raleigh, you have to expect someone to have a career day from the 3-point line (Courtney Fells, 4-for-5). You have to expect an unsung player to shine (Ben McCauley, 6-of-6 from the floor and 17 points). You have to expect the fluky, the bizarre, and the weird. The nation watches that game. The state watches Carolina-State. These Tar Heels don't know about Vinny Del Negro in 1987 or the sheer joy (and relief) at finally beating David Thompson in 1975. There was a play with one minute to go in the first half. Brandon Costner got the ball at the top of the key against Tyler Hansbrough and Lowe asked everyone else to clear out and let Costner operate. As the other four Wolfpack players moved aside, a buzz built in the RBC Center. This is what State fans love. This is their scrappy underdog against Carolina's All-American. This is the perfect embodiment of exactly how they picture the rivalry in one nice, neat package. You could feel it. What do you mean "where are we?" We are right here - doing what you are supposed to do when you lose: expressing humility. What else should we be doing?

Tonight a great basketball team with a great basketball coach won a great basketball game. What I don't get is the fact that more state fans are stunned in disbelief than Carolina fans. Given the history of this series and the tremendous successes for both programs in the national spotlight it's kind of perplexing. It's not like David slinging a rock at Goliath. It was a tremendous, admirable effort from a clearly inspired and chronically underestimated basketball program. It wasn't to prove your team's "worthy of respect," it was to prove your has never fallen from respectability.

So stop acting like you're "finally" legitimizing yourselves, it's disrespectful to the brilliant state teams of years past. Let's face it, if you don't stop acting like NC State basketball has "something to prove" how the hell is anyone else supposed to? You should be very proud of your team's victory it impressed all of us wearing light blue - despite what some of the more stubborn of us say. Don't tarnish it by acting like you toppled a mountain, cause it wasn't luck - it was a greatwin. Congratulations guys!

There weren't as many duke fans until my HS days in the early 90's. There was a lot of good natured trash talking from both sides before the games. I sometimes miss the rivalry being what it used to be. Maybe this game will help bring it back. If nothing else I hope it helps our current players understand that this is a big rivalry game. I'm not so sure they understood that coming into the game."

I remember the 1992 season pretty well, that would have been one interesting time to be a student, to lose to East Tennessee State at home but sweep the Heels let by gameday darling Hubert Davis and Eric Mongoose...that pic of Dean and gut is hilarious, looks like Gut is the bodyguard ready to take a bullet for Dean or something
