A relatively new independent film on the rise of evangelical Christianity in America and their influence on politics. Particular emphasis is given to the indoctrination of children. What are your thoughts?

I've been trying to rent it, but Blockbuster keeps not having it.
Nothing in there should really come as a shock to most of us, especially those who got dragged to Bible Camp or some such. I'm going to try to raise my kids into my religion, sure, but no way in hell am I sending them to anything scarier than Sunday School. 2/6/2007 1:10:34 PM |

I've seen this movie (and the HBO one that's similar) and all I can say is that I feel sorry for these children. The families they presented in this documentary were essentially brainwashing their children through homeschooling with christian-prepared science books and the like. The camp was also pretty bad. And using the children to protest abortion is moronic. They taught the kids phrases like 'What if we aborted the next President?'
What if we aborted the next Hitler?
The movie pretty much disgusted me. 2/6/2007 1:11:37 PM |

Well, this thread is for the discussion surrounding the topic, not an evaluation of its entertainment value, but thanks for the info. 2/6/2007 1:56:04 PM |

If you sign up for Netflix, it's bound to have it. Blockbuster doesn't have a good record of carrying documentaries from what I hear.2/6/2007 3:29:09 PM |

that kid levi is pretty clever, i'm sure he'll grow out of it
the camp was wrong on so many levels. the lady running it pretty much admitting that she could brainwash the kids because she had "the truth", which effectively means all kids should be brainwashed 2/6/2007 4:00:12 PM |

Yeah, I don't think it's as big as they make it out to be.

Not as frightening as the things going on in California and all the weird laws being passed.

I never really understood the concept of brainwashing. How does someone get brainwashed? Doesn't brainwashing occur in everyone's daily life, whether explicitly or implicitly? I guess it's different with kids?
The media is doing a good job of sensationalizing things like this. In the video it says there are new churches like this every 2 years. There is a new church opening up every 2 days in NC. That's a pointless claim. And the commentator was like, "they've taken over the White House". Haha... I'd like to see the survey/report on that one. And also the comment about, "If the evangelical's vote, they've determined the election". That's just the liberals being paranoid. Like I said, media sensationalism. Don't believe the hype.
I do think it's weird that you can get a little 9 year old to cry because of Jesus. Definately weird.

Take over is a strong phrase for what they've done, but Bush is definitely an evangelical and most of them have no problem trying to erode the barrier between church and state. Heck, I know a few people who claim the liberals are trying to make christianity illegal in the US. Considering a LARGE majority of America consists of christians I doubt they'd outlaw their own religion. 2/6/2007 4:50:15 PM |

people make mild attempts at brainwashing you all the time, yes
the difference is these kid's parents sent them to be brainwashed, they have absolutely no interest in their children becoming intelligent, responsible adults that can think for themselves2/6/2007 4:53:08 PM |

the difference between the evangelical christian movement and any other cult is the number of people.
i was raised christian, although not practicing at the time being, i do not have a problem with people living the "christian" life. But fuck you if you are going to try to press your values and morals on me and try to control how i live my life.

The people saying those things cannot at all be considered liberal. One was the lady who ran the church and the other was Ted Haggard.
