So my gf purchased a HP dv6000, and after a few weeks the DVD drive simply disappeared. The drive still has power, and will open/spin. But mycomputer nor nero recognize that a dvd drive is installed.
I uninstalled the primary, secondary and dual IDE controller and rebooted, and had XP reinstall the drivers. Then HP directed me to http://www.tinyurl.com/1q0y. I found my way around the site and installed the Xp-dvd fix, rebooted and still nothing.

Does anyone have a clue what might be going on?

The laptop is 2 months old, and she doesnt want to void the warranty by opening the case.

The laptop does not have a lock to remove the drive manually. Also do i need to install the vbs file?

Most computers come with a 90-day warranty. Call up HP support and tell them you have faulty hardware. They should ship a replacement by mail within a day and a pickup slip so you can ship back the faculty one in the same box.

update:
the drive does not pull out.
ran the vbs file, rebooted, still no drive visible.
1 year warrenty.

hp is calling back tonight. any other ideas?

Stay away from HP computers. I had an hp pavilion laptop and it fell apart in a year. I have had a dell inspiron for 5 years and a ibm thinkpad for 2 and they have been much better quality than the hp.

word, so hp lead me on a wild goose chase which included removing the drive, recovering to a restore point, DELETING the WINSOCK file, and rebooting 20 times.

So now they advise that I reinstall XP?! Is it logical to think that installing the OS again will fix the driver problem? Esp when the drive worked originally and then stopped working randomly? Thanks for the hp warning but I am already up the creek and searching for a paddle.

Just do what they tell you, or pay someone here $30 to fix it.

there was a screw in the bottom of the case holding it. I was expecting a sliding lock, either way I didnt want to void the warrenty. IMO the drive has failed.
