(god help me for doing this)

This page goes live today around 3ish.

Mainly I want to see any browser issues I missed implementing this design. Specifically MAC users. Yes I know it's in tables, no that wasn't up to me, it will be in divs eventually but our timeframe was --> <--. We're using what fireworks put out for us.

On refresh you'll see the main picture change and the swf change as well. I appreciate any helpful comments should there be any issues that arise.

Thanks!

#1 Page doesnt validate:

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fcvm.ncsu.edu%2FindexNEW.html&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline

#2 Fails Section 508 compliance (which you can get in some shit for, the w3 doesnt matter as much)

http://www.contentquality.com/

#3 Fails every priority of WCAG compliance.

http://www.contentquality.com/

Browser Issues:

In firefox 2.0.0.1 the Search button at the top right doesnt line up

In IE 5.5, the Search textbox is squished and the menu options are all out of whack.

In IE 5.1, even more out of whack.

In Firefox 1.5, same problems as 2.0

Opera 9.1 has really bad alignment issues with the quicklinks and search box and button

Across all the browsers, the top left | symbols dont show up consistently and the text alignment in the bottom red box on the page varies from top to center to bottom aligned. The left-side navigational links change line break points in different browsers too.

I have screenshots I can post if you need them

I can boot over to OSX and test in Safari and Camino later if you still need more feedback

#1, fixed as much as I could. The tool reading it has some issues with things it shouldn't... but that will go away with the convert to <div>.

#2 Believe it or not it actually passes when using the "real" tools but doesn't for the web versions. Basically we took a few site readers for the blind and ran it through and it had no trouble navigating. So while it may not technically pass for many reasons it does work fine for the sight impaired. The reason it fails is since the whole site is designed in auto generated tables it freaks out. This will be resolved as soon as it's converted to divs.

#3 same dealio.

We're only required to support IE 6 and up (thank god).

Describe alignment issues with Opera 9.1? Is it the same issue as with the firefox? I've known about that, and reported it and it's one of the things that will be fixed when <div>'s replace the table created by fireworks.

Feel free to post the screenshots. I appreciate that much time you invested in this.

Oh jesus... don't get me started. Basically there's tons of non-existent content and they want to launch the front page as is. I stopped fighting after I saw it was a pointless battle.

You see the left side menu? Half the items are there. See the above nav? half the items are there. And of course those WILL be buttons but no content exists and they didn't want a barren bar up there.

Yeah so now you understand why the website isn't in "prime" shape and why I was like "Break me". Much faster to have others let you know what's wrong than trying to figure it out yourself when you have 4 hours to do it in.

Okay. Fixed 99% of the problems with #2. I cannot fix the embed thing. The designer of the site claims it's compliant according to the reader and dreamweaver so I'm letting that one fall on him.

Thanks a bunch for your critique of the site. It's a nice site it's just being pushed out like 2 months early.

At least my duct tape javascript works for the news and picture rotation.

You NEED to support Opera. The Nintendo Wii uses it as it's internal browser and a LARGE majority of mobile internet devices run on Opera.

You also NEED to support Firefox, as it makes up a good 20+ % of PC browser use, and a majority for OSX users.

The move to positioning or "divs" is going to be a nightmare trying to convert it from tables.

change the title

did only the front page change - every link clicked looks like an entirely different site - nothing flows - when nothing flows it sucks imho

Support for Opera is coming. Basically we were given 2 weeks to get the front page up. Lots of politics involved but in short support for non IE/Mozilla was just not a priority.

The page WILL be constantly evolving I promise you...

Mobile devices are defintely a priority once we rolled the first version of the public site out. Basically we have 4 departments all vying for first billing, add in administrative desires etc and you get the idea of what we face.

The second round will take the initial graphics and reslice them up to work with <divs> but this time we aren't exactly in a rush to deploy it. We'll have time for proper testing and I got to set the rules for that.

1) Changing size on font wont break the page
2) Printable version
3) Support for IE6, IE7, Mozilla, Opera and mobile devices (not all run opera).

The original concept was that we would build from the ground up. Change the framework, set templates and convert the whole site in one fel swoop. Well that got nixed because the Dean wanted to see some results in the front page. They wanted to see it change from the front page downward.

Add in a bunch of politics, uninformed decision makers, a little dash of stupid and well yeah you get the idea. Welcome to Nc State lol.

Regardless I think the front page looks great and eventually the flow of the rest of the site will reflect the front page. So stay tuned ladies and gents. Right now I'm working with HR to develop faculty bio pages instead of the mish mosh that is now while Tom works on the second tier templates.

My point of view is if you take the time and develop your site well it works in 95% of the browsers out there. That includes firefox, opera etc. The problems always come when implenting the css. It looks different in all browsers where CSS is concerned and takes forever to troubleshoot. Tables on the other hand show up the same in all browsers (mostly) and are easy to troubleshoot.

And the simple fact that fireworks outputs them into nested tables that we can easily manipulate made us focus on that instead of spending most of our time figuring out how to makes this display correctly, while at the same time figuring out what content needed to be on the front page, what content we needed developed, who would develop it... (meetings, committees, more meetings... did I mention meetings... you get the idea).

Oh and you think that picture is funny. http://cvm.ncsu.edu/dphp/rhm/anderson.html

Office space! You guys better look out.
