A friend of my mom just got a ticket in Cary for failing to move over one lane when there's a police car on the side of the road. Does she need to get a lawyer for that? or is it something simple where you can just show up in court and get it reduced? If yes for lawyer, who do you recommend?

this was just a passed law lil bit ago right? I doubt a lawyer will do shit for her considering it has been said over and over on tv with in the last 6 months.

well yeah if u go flying by a 60 sure, but what if some dick wad is right next to you, or several cars are? and you cant move over, i guess you should slam on ur breaks and risk another accident.

no, i'm not a cop. i'm a raleigh firefighter.

and the law states you should either move over or slow down albeit moving over is definitely preferred. slowing down is, of course, the next best thing. the reason i prefer the moving over part is because dickheads who were once running 60 in a 45 will "slow down" to 50. the law allows drivers to use common sense when it comes to slowing down and today's society greatly suffers from the lack of common sense. the reason why i'm so for this law is the shit i've seen on accident scenes. i have parked the engine in a manner to protect the scene and have had drivers drive between the engine and the crash site with some even running over our equipment. it's hard enough working a trauma much less having to watch our back at the same time when these out-of-control drivers come barrelling through.

^^^ its move over, or if you can't move over slow down to way below the speed limit. Like 15 below, so is Cary, speed limit is 35, she should have been going 20 or slower and would have been fine.

true when i first read post i thought the lil 'ol lady was cruizin by the cop. she was probably haulin ass though. wonder who stopped her? did the cop jump in his car and go after or did they have another unit.

I move over for everyone on the shoulder, be it cops or someone just stopped for some reason.

After I pass, I always look behind to see if the following cars do the same thing About 95% do not, in my experience

well, she got the ticket she's getting off the highway. There were 3 cop cars sitting right on shoulder of the exit. This is the exit where you get off 64 to crossroads. This was during the rush hour afternoon too, so there was no way she could have gone faster than the speed limit. This lady works 60+ hours/week so I don't think she watches alot of TV, and she doesn't speak english real well so she probably didn't hear about that law through the media. Oh well, I'll just tell her to forget about the lawyer, and just pay the fine, since it doesn't affect her insurance point.

i agree it's a good law. what i don't agree with is the predatory ticketing going on as a result of all the recent news coverage of it.

accident scenes are one thing, but for routine traffic stops officers need to take some responsibility here also. GET YOUR SHIT OFF THE ROAD.

I've always pulled over when it is feasible whether it's a cop of just someone broken down or pulled over. It's a courtesy move.

A HP officer honked at me the last time I didn't move over. There was oncoming traffic so I couldn't move, but I did slow down to about 45 in a 55 zone. I was driving my mom's car, so I was like "Dad, I might have to run that cop in the Avalon." We just laughed about it and kept on.

^^^from what i've been told, there are two scenarios going on. both have a driver in the car.

1.) officer parks on the shoulder with his blue lights going. takes off after anyone that doesn't move over when they could have.

2.) officer parks on the side of the road with blues going. radios violations to a team of 2-3 cars/motorcycles and they pull the offenders.

fwiw, this has been taking place on 40 west of raleigh and 85.

yeah, that's what i was referring to. in videos like that, it's almost always a routine traffic stop. in those cases, the officer needs to take some responsibility in getting his cruiser and who ever is pulled over off the road. i see alot of times where people pulled and cruisers are right at the white line, no wonder they get hit.

accident scenes are of course a whole other situation, you can't exactly control moving that.

also, you ever notice that when you drive, you tend to steer wherever you look. it's a mental thing and non-controllable, so if you turtle-neck to look at an accident you're most likely to turn in that direction unvoluntarily

^actually, they probably did see it which is why they hit it. studies have proven that a driver with a BAC over the legal limit gets "mesmerized" by the flashing lights causing him to stare at them which causes him to drive straight towards them. the same studies show that when there is a break in the concentration of a single-colored light, it tends to break the concentration of the drunk thus preventing the driver to lock onto the flashing lights. this is why emergency vehicles will have an abundance of a single colored light and one or two amber lights. ex: a fire engine of course has red and white lights. until a few years ago, that's all they had on them. now they are required to have at least one single flashing amber light on the left rear.
