Im looking for a smaller SUV and came across a few on ebay. Opinions? lots of work or drive it and forget it? these are the gassers, not the CDI models.

^^comparatively speaking, that is small/light in the "true" SUV sector. that's excluding crossovers.

The ML-320 was a dud from the get-go. It almost single-handedly ruined their "initial quality" ratings as a brand. Avoid it like it was an out of warranty Land Rover.

Well yeah. At least the Rover is a capable machine instead of a boxy mini-van with poor gas mileage.

I've been wanting an X5 lately. They're one of the few SUVs I think I'd enjoy as a DD and I've seen some decent ones with the 4.4 in the $25k range.

I've always like the GC's. I haven't gotten into the latest body style yet, but the previous one seemed like the perfect size for what I'd want to drive if I had a DD SUV. I'm not really into the land yachts.

I drive an '02 GMC Envoy, and love it. Its my dads old car so its got some miles on it, 120k but its runs great and is big enough to put stuff in it, and has gotten 18.4 mpg over the life of the car with that I-6. I would look at one used one of thoes way before an M-Class, you can get em for fairly cheap too.

Yeah the first ML was a dude, but it wasn't some crossover poeser (compared to most). It was body on frame.

Of course the new ML is leaps and bounds better, and yet its a unit body

Tell us what you actually want the SUV for? Do you plan on going off road AT ALL, EVER?

I go off road about every day with work, I saw some MLs on ebay cheap and figured it was too good to be true. Id like to stomp around in an old f250, but its a little rough looking. I do land development consulting ( similar to ZX's old gig)

can someone spell out whats so bad about the first gen ML?

i knew the interior fit/finish wasn't up to their usual standards, but figured that was it.

One thing I remember about the first gen ML was that when Car/Driver tested it in a comparison, the off road part of the trip caused the body to flex enough to crack the windshield.
