Yeah we have a 1973 Undefeated Season 27-0 banner that hangs to the left of the 1974 NCAA Championship banner.

I really like this quote:
Quote :

Didn't Dean have something to do with us being on probation?

I always thought Dean Smith reported a recruiting violation when we got DT....whatever it was, it was well worth it.

Yeah DT stayed the night with his older high school buddy in his dorm room on his recruiting visit. Apparently that was considered free room and board and Dean found out about it and turned us in. I just call it being smart. Heck if I'm visiting a school and a friend of mine goes there, I'm gonna try and stay at his place instead of forking money out for a hotel room.

Yes, both Dook and NCSU got probation for DT's recruitment. DT got in a pickup game at NCSU that the NCAA decided was a "tryout", even though he was already committed and everyone knew he was phenomenal. A Dook booster gave him gifts. Whoever landed DT was likely to get on probation, b/c of both how highly coveted DT was and the bizarre regulations and lack of sophistication of the NCAA at the time.

The really shady stuff was from Gardner Webb. The NCAA has thick files on UNC, NCSU, and Duke's recruitment of DT, and a file twice as thick for GW.

^^I thought the staying with a friend was after he came up here 2 weeks before orientation, and he had also caught a ride with an assistant or former assistant that was driving up to Raleigh anyway (didn't pay for his own transportation).

so basically to summarize:

He stayed at NC State with a buddy...free room and board.
He played in a pickup game or 12 after he committed.
And we gave him a ride to campus for free.

And it cost us a serious chance at a national championship.

And people wonder why we hate UNC.

And, in case anyone was wondering, we basically just forgot to charge him room and board for the dorm room. I think it was $4 that he was supposed to be charged.

- He stayed with the buddy, but not to the knowledge of the coaching staff. It was his best friend from H.S. According to DT himself, the coaches didn't even know he was up here
- Not only had he committed prior to the pickup game, he had already signed his LOI and enrolled at NC State. He still wasn't a 'student' yet, so the NCAA deemed it as a 'tryout', even though he was already 100% coming here. A graduate assistant with the BBall team played in the 'tryout' game with DT, and sadly, so did a football player for UNC (His name escapes me). Well, he went back to UNC and told UNC's football staff, becuase being an athlete, knew it was a violation. The NCSU graduate assistant claims he had no idea he was violating NCAA rules

The chief NCAA investigator that put us on probation for David Thompson's recruitment was Bill Gutheridge's college roomate at Kansas State University...that's where UNC comes into all of this. Apparently, ol' Dean called in a favor

so many coaches are related in someway that anyone could claim "calling in a favor" anytime the NCAA steps in... especially someone like Dean Smith with his Kansas connections

Read 'Skywalker'... it talks about it in there.

NCAA headquarters is about 15 minutes from Manhattan, KS. Bill Gutheridge's college roomate, at the time, was one of the chief NCAA investigators for the NCAA, and oddly enough, the one that investigated NC State

According to Skywalker, it was a well known fact that any time this guy (the book refers to him as 'Mr. X' and doesn't give an identity) was around these parts for any reason, he'd swing by and talk to his old friend (Gutheridge).

I dunno... but DT said it himself. If anyone would know what went on, it's him.

So if the NCAA puts teams on probation for players doing things that the program is unaware of when is Duke going to be on probation for Magette and USC for Bush? I mean they took away UMass' accolades, surely they would do the same to Duke and USC...

-- to be honest, chances are everyone who went after him violated other rules in a big way too. I'll take the end result of having the greatest college bball player ever and a National Championship because of him in return for that 1 year of probation..

jaybee, Deano went to KU and still has a lot of ties to the university (Larry brown and roy coached there). I realize were talking KSU, but Deano was not only a force in the 70's, but from the area.

yeah, thats what I said.. thats my whole point, almost any coach that has been around for any amount of time probably is connected in some roundabout way to just about anyone you want to try to connect them to

^ hahahaha, thats the whole reason i said it to begin with, a few people give me shit about Tennessee players on here and my point was that every major program has their fuckups

Our program realized we screwed up, but they expected the typical slap on the wrist...not what they got. Hence why NC State fans are so pissed about it.... they believe there were other forces at work in this one (per DT himself, in Skywalker).

All things together (Free car rides, some shit about paving his families driveway, the 'tryout', and staying for free in a friends dorm room) got us put on probation.

There was also some shit about DT receiving 'gifts'. I think part of the reason Duke got in trouble was becuase of the sweatshirt incident. DT had a family friend that he'd known since his early childhood that also happened to be a Duke grad. For his (18th ?) birthday he bought him an NC State sweatshirt (After he'd decided to go there). Becuase he was a donor for Duke, they viewed this as an unauthorized gift....even though he gave DT a sweatshirt of another school and had known him his whole life.

I dunno.... give Skywalker a read. It's actually a pretty terrible book, but it gives a great great insight into the 73' probation from someone who lived it. He actually says 'you'll never see this printed anywhere else, but I'm going to tell you what really went on'. Most of the stuff I've mentioned here is paraphrased (and a bit rusty on memory) from his book

The NCAA cleared all parties of wrongdoing on the driveway paving, even if it did seem suspicious...

And we had a 10 year gap between the last NCAAs with Fire + Ice and our next appearance, when Jules was a frosh. We had some bad teams under Les and the first 5 years of Herb. The last year before the NCAAs, when we didn't even make the NIT, was horrible. Damien Wilkins would do 15 pump fakes, then we'd have to shove up a bad shot as the shot clock expired. Herb was nearly fired, Damien declared for the pros, Gerald ran his mouth about Herb, and Herb wouldn't let Damien back on the team (he transferred to UGA).

It lasted too long. We got used to being down and started to forget. I'm only 22 so I had to do some research of my own before I learned we weren't always an underdog who won a thriller every now and then. It was Herb's departure that helped me finally realize we were supposed to be better. That we'd paid our dues, and it was time to stand back up.
