http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/02/15/china.ants.death.reut/index.html
Quote : | "BEIJING, China (Reuters) -- A Chinese man has been sentenced to death for conning people out of 3 billion yuan ($387 million) in a giant scam to breed ants, local media said on Thursday.
In his defense, Wang said he did not know the first thing about raising ants and was "quite unclear" about the costs, the Beijing News said." |
My first thought when I read this was: Fucking right. Skin the next CEO that pulls some fast shit in the US and see if that won't keep some of the corporate elite in line.
Now, assuming it were 1)possible to squeeze that kind of punishment out of the grasp of cruel & unusual, and 2)setting aside for this argument the debate on whether capital punishment is an effective deterrent of murder,
would you think this could be an effective deterrent to white collar crime?

putting some white collar criminals in prison with a bunch of assrapers and then having the SEC show the video at CEO orientation might deter crime. 2/16/2007 11:06:53 AM |

Well, as with any deterrent, it wouldn't work unless you could show that perpetrators had a good chance of getting caught. Maybe that's the case already; I don't know. But if only a small percent of corporate fraud is uncovered, then people will still be willing to take the chance because payoffs are so huge.
It had occured to me, though, that there are a great many crimes for which the death penalty would be a supremely effective deterrent, much more so than with murder. 2/16/2007 12:20:10 PM |

The problem with this approach in China is that it's not fairly done. What usually happens is that a new faction will come into power in the Politburo, and then aggressively dig up any sort of corruption in the background of their opposition (which isn't hard to find in Chinese politics), bring charges against them, and then use it as an excuse to either put a 7.62mm round through the back of their head or ship them to a prison out in the frontier. 2/16/2007 3:18:37 PM |

Ending abuse is prison would be a better idea.
We should at least start explicitly sentencing people to torture, as we all seem to be okay with it.2/21/2007 8:17:06 PM |
