try auto trans fluid in the oil. run in a bit, drain/refill with fresh oil.
if it still does it after trying those couple of tricks, might be time for some new lifters.

little background here guys.....it is a 1976 6.6L pontiac w/ prob 200k miles on it....there is no reason to tear into the engine at all unless it is coming out and a new one is going in.....i am just looking for a quick fix here.... 2/25/2007 7:27:27 PM |

Just pull the intake, valve covers, and take the rockers off. slide out the pushrods and snatch the lifters out.
You will need intake gasket set, 2 valve cover gaskets, 16 lifters, oil and filter, and some coolant. A basic SAE toolset and a $30 torque wrench from Advance Auto will do the job just fine. Maybe youll need to buy a $10 lifter puller, they have that too. 2/25/2007 7:33:30 PM |

i assume you're sure it's a lifter tick? some people mistake one for an exhaust manifold leak.
lifters are easy on that car... try some auto trans fluid like i said, if that doesn't work just replace them. compressed air makes it easier.
don't put any lucas in it for any extended amount of time, unless you want to blow it up.

because it's thick as mollases... you might have some nice pressure, but your flow goes to hell. hell, i'd put it in a motor i didn;t care about to stop some smoking/leaking. nothing else though.

The ATF trick works great for cleaning out all of the small passages in any motor. I would also switch to a thinner oil. I still run 10/30 in all my junk that has 120k+. Rember thinner oil moves much easier. Its even more important when its cold. 2/26/2007 12:02:25 AM |
