(OK, first off this is this user's girlfriend posting, but we were discussing this earlier and he's asleep, and I figured TWW was the best place to ask )
OK so what the hell is the deal with the commercials for these cars advertising that they have room for all friends and all your shit, too? They have payloads of like 650 or 700 pounds. But what we were talking about was he works with some REALLY big people, like 400-600 pounds big. And their wives are like in the 250-400 pound range. So what if a couple like that walks into a dealership and wants to buy a Toyota Prius? Does the salesman tactfully inform them of the payload and that that number is to ensure safety? What if it gets sold to them them and then later on they have an accident due to they were both in it and exceeding the payload? Whose fault is it (or a better question, whose fault will the couple say it is?) I know I sure as hell wouldn't know what to say if I was the dealer and a couple came up to me wanting to buy one of these small ass compact SUV's where it was visibly obvious they alone would exceed the payload. So who can give us some insight as to the inner workings of this shit !...............or maybe you have a WHAT IF of your own 3/1/2007 1:10:05 AM |

I plan to get a hybrid SUV. That shit better handle my ass.
Fuck, tomorrow morning, I'ma get my friend to check and make sure my Jeep isn't sagging or some shit when I get in. I'm personally familiar with one guy whose car did scrape along speed bumps and whatnot.
If my Jeep sags, I'm asking my parents for money to go to fat camp this summer.
(I realize that payload is somewhat different than what a frame can handle, but as a fatty, I'm concerned about the frame right now.)

they came out with new mileage ratings (new calculations for accuracy), and the hybrids are now rated significantly less than the were. on the order of 10% less mpg than previously stated by the old rating system. 3/2/2007 12:54:00 PM |

yeah, Toyota was promising 60 MPG, but nobody ever got that kinda mileage. Now they are labeled at 48 MPG, which is realistically attainable if you drive like an old lady. 3/2/2007 1:14:20 PM |

^ Amen.
And hybrid cars aren't getting the mileage that the manufacturers are claiming either:

^well, to be truthful, that applies to every car, not just the hybrid ones.
hybrid people are the main ones complaining though

And you hardly ever hear of the dangers of hybrid vehicles:
Quote : | "Some of the accidents that we run are horrific, and if that battery pack is split open we definitely have a shock hazard as well as a small hazardous-materials problem, [firefighter] Groff said." |

^^correct, from another article:
Quote : | "EPA spokesman John Millett said estimates will decline the most under the new methods for vehicles with the least powerful engines -- and best fuel economy -- because they are proportionately more affected by loads such as hills and air conditioning. "The more fuel-efficient a vehicle is, the more of a difference there will be between the old and new method," Millett said. " |

in short, its wrong on almost all cars, but its the "most" wrong on hybrids.

Ive driven a prius probably 500 miles total.
Highway youre looking at 50 +- 3
City driving like a normal car youre looking at 40's
And city driving like you care, you could probably do 60's . Ive driven to hanes mall and back (winston salem) to my house and had it at like 75 ish (roughly 20 miles).
Take the numbers for what you will. The car costs about 20k now.

BAN AIRBAGS AND SMART SEAT BELTS
And
1. I doubt the OP's scenario occurs that often. If you're repulsively fat, you clearly have no problem consuming more than your fare share of resources, so I doubt you'd have any interest in hybrids.
2. Wouldn't a hybrid be better for fat people than a car of similar characteristics? Electric power has a much flatter torque curve.3/2/2007 5:54:38 PM |

i think the way they design these cars is...if you can fit in it and sit comfortably, you do not exceed the payload.

^^ You can shut off many airbags and motorized seatbelts can be modified. The very design of the electric hybrid is what poses the danger. Oh, and you're right, rear-end collisions never happen.
Don't worry, though, if electric hybrids cause hazardous waste spills or shock emergency workers to death, you can just buy some carbon offsets. "Green" trumps all, right? 3/2/2007 10:06:40 PM |

I'm arguing that in both cases, the danger inherent in the vehicles don't justify stopping their use.
What exactly are you arguing?

Don't say things like this. Boone may not have many friends, he may not like going out, he may not like going out on Friday nights, or he may work a very demanding job that precludes him from living it up every night like a teenager. Whatever the case, it doesn't matter.
Quote : | "hooksaw: PS: I shouldn't have to explain that I was using an absurb premise to illustrate the absurdity of the post I was addressing, fucking life n00b." |
But the original post you were addressing was not absurd. Let's break it down:
1. You were talking about how hybrids are dangerous vehicles. 2. Prawn Star pointed out that big ass SUVs are still more dangerous than hybrids. (This is the post that you've deemed absurd.) 3. You came back to his post by questioning him about all sorts of big ass vehicles, which didn't make any sense because of course a lot of those big ass vehicles are also more dangerous than hybrids...and? What was it that you objected to in Prawn Star's post? That he didn't include vehicles other than SUVs? What was so fucking "absurd" about his post?
(Boone is not a n00b, by the way. You're the n00b for not knowing that.)3/3/2007 6:19:02 AM |

see this quote from Toyota:
Quote : | ""The high voltage batteries are contained in an extremely strong steel protective case. In the event an abnormal condition is detected, all high voltage circuits are disabled and high voltage is contained inside the protective case. High voltage cables are heavily insulated, shielded and isolated."" |
