looking to go camping soon, and i'm new to this state and was curious where the good camp sites are.
things that interest me:
hiking trails - needed body of water- prefered
I know there is google, but i'm also looking for personal experiences people have had at locations.
thanks. irsc 3/2/2007 12:04:33 PM |

you can camp out on the north end of carolina beach
you need 4 wheel drive to get out there, but you'll be camping on the beach and its free if you go before memorial day. if the weather is nice, then there will be a lot of people on the beach during the day, but at night it gets pretty secluded.
there arent any hiking trails out there, but the body of water is the ocean 3/2/2007 10:51:44 PM |

You can camp at Carolina Beach state park. Its cheap and there are trails and camp sites. No need for a 4wd either. 3/4/2007 10:58:44 AM |

we have narrowed it down between
Goose Creek in New Bern Falls Lake Near Wake Forest Cedar Point near Emerald Isle area
anyone been to any of them and can determine which is the best of the three? 3/6/2007 12:57:20 PM |
ImYoPusha All American 6249 Posts user info edit post |
you are supposed to only camp in designated areas of Falls Lake. I dont know of any around Wake Forest so if you decide on this one, keep an eye out for the rangers.

Camp Mortimer- it is a few miles off of hwy 181 past morganton... not far from lineville & the parkway. there are shower facilities & whatnot and good trails in the area (harpers creek falls, etc.) go in the summer if you can and tube down Wilson Creek- you'll love it but the water is ice cold until late june. during summer weekends they have fish fries at the church in Edgemont (a few miles down the road from Mortimer) and also you can go up to Jonas Ridge to see the Brown Mtn Lights. I've been camping in this area since i was 13. every year we met some new people while camping up there and a lot of them were rednecks but interesting to talk to & they know all of the best hiking trails & whatnot. 3/6/2007 6:25:09 PM |

i don't believe that is a state park, but rather it is run by the National Park Service as part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. I camped there once, but it's been a while so I don't remember too much . . . except the mosquitoes were horrible. The bastards would bite through jeans.
Are you looking to go RV camping with some sort of trailer and have bathrooms nearby, or are you looking to do some primitive tent camping? 4/30/2007 12:01:27 AM |

^not that kind of camping
we are tent camping, but a toliet would be nice, but if the location is nice we can make do. since we are wanting a body of water, showers don't really matter. 4/30/2007 1:03:11 PM |

I like to camp behind the crates after setting booby traps on the steps. After noobs blow themselves up, any leftovers get both barrels of my Baikal shotty. I sometimes camp in their spawn but that's cheating. 4/30/2007 8:09:36 PM |

climb Mt. Mitchell. tallest mountain on the east coast.
car camp in the state park near the base. from there it's 6 miles of switchbacks over a 4000' gain to summit. round trip in about 8 hours. no gear needed, just good boots, a day pack and water. 5/2/2007 1:29:26 AM |

I camped at Goose Creek over Easter. It was wonderful except that it was snowing
There are only 12 tent sites so you have to get there early. i love this place because you can't see other tent sites from yours and the rangers are very nice and dont care if you have alcohol as long as you dont get too rowdy.
there are two nice bathrooms, but no sink or shower. lots and lots of hiking trails (we hiked 8 miles one day) and right on the water. there's even a little sandy beach you can hike to. 5/2/2007 9:07:11 AM |
