it's just a sweeper, no vacuum, right? do you still need to occasionally run the real vacuum?
how big of an area can it cover?

my mom has had hers for a few years. She runs it all the time, but she has 2 dogs so there is always hair on the floor.

do you mean, she runs it all the time because there is always hair on the floor, or even though she runs it all the time, there is still hair all over the floor (i.e. it sucks)

so how well do these things really work? Does it do just as good a job as a person would or does it miss some stuff in corners and such?

My parents have one, they're great, and over time it can cover a very large area. You'd probably have to worry about the batteries running out before worrying about an area too big. I don't think they ever use a regular vacuum anymore either, it does a pretty good job.

I think they all can do that, you just need to have or buy the special docking station that can broadcast to it.

i have the roomba sage from BJs warehouse club or whatever its called, it has a virtual wall, the home docking station(the one that broadcasts) and a remote control.

misses corners and the very edges of walls. It isn't meant to replace a real vacuum cleaner, but it makes it so you only have to do a thorough vacuuming every few weeks or so. I have a long haired cat and it did a great job of getting the hair up.

the more you run the roomba the less you will eventually have to run it if that makes sense. it will take several passes to get up the hair the vacuum missed, but sooner or later it will pick up less hair because there is less hair to pick up.

http://shop.bjs.com/iRobot--174--Roomba--174--Vacuuming-Robot-Household_stcVVproductId7241577VVcatId428468VVviewprod.htm

its 179 at the capital blvd location.

My parents got one but I think they got a retarded one cause it always goes into a corner and humps the wall. My sister has the same unit and she likes it a lot. She even named it.

it's ok, but their quality is crap.

there are posts all over the net about parts wearing out, i.e. batteries taking a crap before 6 mos, etc...

sure there are retrofit batteries on ebay, but the company has terrible customer service.

i've got a scooba and a roomba (with control module), both from costco.

on shorter carpet, it's mediocre. oh god, on longer pile carpet, it's sad to watch.

scooba is ok.

YEa the battery in mine is crapping out and wont hold a charge. It always dies before finishing and starts whining for me to come get it. I use it mainly in my kitchen and stuff for the doghair.

We have one of the schedulers for our downstairs which is all hardwood floors, and my wife LOVES it.

It goes out from its dock every morning at 10am, vacumns the house and returns to its dock.

We love our roomba.

i've used one a lot overseas (Dyson 2DRUMS Allergy). not that great. sometimes the clothes didn't dry very well after the wash. expensive as shit (comparatively). it wasn't broken, b/c i had the service tech out there multiple times. it looked pretty though. fit and finish wasn't as good as a say a whirlpool he.

not worth it. mediocre suction compared to the competition who also has lifetime hepa and a billion vortexes or someshit. plus since dyson's patent ran out, there has been crazy competition.

check out consumer reports, they have hoovers that cost less that work better.

if i do have a portable vacuum, it's going to be a japanese model that has a mattress/bedding beater. for allergies/dust. i've never seen that feature on anything here.

I've got one of the Oreck XLs (8lb vac) and a Hoover with a Hepa filter. I like the Oreck a lot, but it doesn't have any attachments for the stairs and couch.

My siblings and I got my mom a Roomba for Christmas a couple years ago. As mentioned by others, it will never replace your vacuum cleaner, but it does reduce the regularity that you'll need to do it. That's how my mom uses it: she'll run the roomba regularly (on the hardwood and tile floors we have downstairs) and then do a light sweep or mop every month or so.

Hate to tell you, but this is just not true. The suction of a Dyson mediocre? As compared to what and over what amount of time?

While I agree, since the patent expired there are a LOT of clones, I'll stick to the guy who's been doing is for 28 years and did it in the first place because NO ONE ELSE WOULD.

Say what you want about Dyson products, but they do everything the way it should be done, not the way that makes the most money (as their washer/dryers should be evidence of)

Um, Dyson only made a washer as far as I know, so what does that have to do with how well they dried? I think maybe you have it confused with something else, as CR01 washers have almost a cult following for how well they work and how reliable they are.

What Consumer Reports--which I trust more than Dyson, Roomba, or Noen--has to say about Roomba and Dyson:

Yea I dont think anyone thinks or expects that a Roomba will do as well as a regular vacuum. The whole point of the Roomba is the do-a-little-a-lot versus the do-a-lot-a-little mentality of most vacuum cleaners.

Sucks to see the Dyson falling away, but I guess it's good for the consumer that there are finally good (or now I suppose better) alternatives.

blah blah Dyson get's me off....

That's not what this is about. Roomba does what it's built to do. Clean up my damn dog and cat hair in between sweeps and vacuum sessions. I'm a big fan of the Roomba for that reason alone. I would sweep the kitchen everyday and /still/ have hair bunnies running around. The Roomba solved that issue. I only have one room that is carpet. Fuck a Dyson, it doesn't have shit on a Roomba + broom + swiffer.

the roomba scares the shit out of my kid. he's also a scaredy kat. he'll be playing by himself and BAM the roomba is off to the races. i'm sure it would be ok if a majority of my house were hardwoods, but practicality is key and carpet is #1 for now.

Quote :
"so what does that have to do with how well they dried? "

sorry, in my not so good english, i meant to say that the machine didn't extract water out clothes as well as it should have for the price and thus didn't dry well afterwards.

i'll stick with the companies that take his ideas and run wild with them, thus making a superior product for less money. i'm not a loyalist, i'd rather be practical with my money.

My faith in Consumer Reports plummeted after they ranked image quality on DSLRs lower than compact point and shoots. Sure, it was clearly because they had someone evaluating something they didn't know how to use, but when they aren't willing to keep that from happening, everything else is slightly more suspect.
