I have my second job interview coming up with Kohl's tomorrow. I did my first interview through the career center and got called back for a second interview. My main goal is to work outside of North Carolina, and Kohl's is a department store and they have locations all over the United States. If they offer me a position here I would still consider it though.
In my first interview I asked the interview what can I do If I wanted to work in one of your other locations outsdie of North Carolina. She said if you are chosen for the next part of the interview you can tell the interviewer where you want to work and she would fill out paperwork forward it to where it needed to go.
My question is: how should i go about brining up the fact that I want to work at another location?
The interviewer is the hiring manager for this area and is specifically hiring for this area. So, if I told her that i wanted t work somewhere else, I'm thinking I may not get an offer to work here at all. Another thing I was thinking is if they give me an offer to work here, I could then ask them If I could work in one of their other locations. How does that sound?

Anyone who has any advice they can share or has experience with trying to get a job out of state please let me know. Thanks

what job are they hiring you for? is it some menial labor position? if so, I probably wouldn't bring it up. If its a manager position it might be different. I'd probably wait until you'd been hired and been there at least three months before trying to get transferred.

^it is for manager in training position. their training process is between 3-5 months. and another thing to add, the interviewer said that where you are trained is where you will be working, so...

I would express your interest in working outside of NC if you dont get it cause of that then whatever, plus working in retail sucks

i think you have a better hope of getting the job then getting transferred

what was your degree in (i assume you have graduated since you have the ability to move)

just be straight with them.

tell them that ideally you would like to move somewhere, but you are interested in the position so you would be willing to stay put if necessary.

a company wants their employees to be happy, so if theres something available outside of nc and that what you want, they would rather put you there.

most large retail chains want to move you around anyway, it's probably not a big deal. just tell them what you want.

so when they ask "what is your biggest weakness?" iwould like to have a decent answer that I dont have to stumble through

in short I think my biggest weakness is taking on too much work and not delegating enough but I don't want them to think I have poor time management either


but like WTF I hate this question

I would spin it around in their favor and say you are very flexible on where you live. Large retailers love that. I remember working at Best Buy 15 years ago how bad I felt for the store managers that they would get moved to a store 30 miles away on a whim of the district office and still have a crazy alternating work schedule. You can not really put down any roots with a job like that, but that's the nature of the business.

One of my best friends from HS ended up marrying her store manager from her teenage mall job. They were probably an HR violation or whatever back then, but since then he has been promoted multiple times and they have lived all over the country. I think they live in Denver now, and knowing her she probably does not mind living there at all.

Retailers can't function without a flexible management team and staff. Focus on getting hired knowing that once you get in your fastest way to get promoted will likely be to move around.

that's a good one...the traditional advice to to spin a positive as a negative which you have done, but maybe you could do a little better with it.

ok so

I'm not always great at delegating and saying no, because I like to be a team player and do thorough work. However, I also know that isn't always realistic or the only way to produce good work, so I proactively check myself to be sure I am being realistic with my goals. If I see things getting behind for any reason (new deadlines, new workload, misjudging time needed), I approach my team early to devise a solution that meets the deadlines without creating an emergency or sloppy work.

You: I think my biggest weakness is that I'm probably too honest.

Interviewer: Too honest? I really don't consider honesty to be a weakness.

You: I really don't give a fuck what you think.

on a side note I have to sit on the other side of the table tomorrow - 8 straight hours of panel interviews. this is just round one of three, too.
