chris simon is a thug after that hit.

but the bottom line is most of the time nhl players are doing what they get paid to do, not simply letting their emotions/ego take over and throwin down. i don't see why it's so hard to distinguish.

there is also the fact that nba players dress/speak like they live in the middle of harlem. i think that helps the thug perception.

Yeah, he's a thug. But you're a little late to the party. Jesse Boulerice, Marty McSorley, and Alexander Perezhogin have all been involved in similar incidents over the past nine years.

Didn't you know? Listening to that hippity-hop music and wearing baggy jeans makes you a thug.

Hitting someone in the face with a stick means you are an intense competitor.

There was obvious mutual respect passing between them when the stick slammed into his grill.

lol

i think a definition of thug is a lot more accurately something to the effect of "a violent person" than "a black person who wears baggy clothing"

Yes, this was a thug action... it happens... but it still doesn't change my stance on basketball vs.hockey...it justmeans that there are bad apples in both...

when i said most of the time, i meant most of the time that fights occur. guys on the roster know their jobs, and it's to go fight. no one on an nba roster is encouraged to fight.

see, in hockey you have real men beating the shit out of each other...face to face, non-stop for 3 periods. they can take and and dish it out

in basketball, you have 'melo doing the biggest pussy/bitch hit ever in the history of man-kind and running away like some faggot because he's scared to get hit back. but you can't run in hockey - you act like a bitch you're going to get smacked like a bitch

or kobe doing his little gay ass slap to draw a foul after a jumpshot. somebody does that in hockey - they get the shit beat out of them and don't do it again without knowing the consequences

the reason why it's ok in hockey is because the guys are tough enough to take a beating...if you let people get in fights in the nba, you'd have broken bitches littering the floor...which would be fine, because maybe then we could get rid of the worst professional sport ever

that being said - going upside someone's head is being a thug or whatever you want to call it...it's certainly beyond goon

nail simon to the fucking cross. i've never liked that guy. aside from that one good year he had where he almost got 50 points, he's been nothing but a 4th line goon who can hardly skate and was a middleweight at best. the only reason players respect him on the ice is because of his dirty hits...not his average fighting ablility, not his speed, not his scoring prowess.

and for the record, yes the term "thug" is still reserved for minorities who act/speak/dress like they live in harlem....aka the NBA

V cock punch on the ice is kind of pointless...everybody wears a cup

could you imagiane the cock-puncher on ice? the whole team would have whipped his ass...hell, it may have even gotten the greatest thing in pro sports to happen...GOALIE FIGHT!

Why do we glorify fighting in hockey and not in other sports?

And I'm not talking about enforcers. I understand and respect the role of enforcers, but if there weren't so many thugs in hockey, they wouldn't need enforcers.

Yeah, a basketball player has his body to fight with. A hockey player has a big long stick in his hands and razor blades on his feet.

VIs that a joke?

i feel the general public is somewhat to blame for incidents like this. hear me out

bettman came on in '93 or '94 as commissioner. people like started whining early on about how the nhl was too violent and that there shouldn't be all the fighting blah blah blah. bettman made rule changes over the years to put a leash on things to bring in fans who wouldn't otherwise have come. the role of the enforcer dwindled and is pretty much obsolete. the so called "enforcers" of today are nothing like they were 10 years ago. stu "grim reaper" grimson, bob probert, joey kocur, etc made people like brashear and simon look like french school girls. the point is, people were much more afraid to throw a cheap shot like this back then because they knew there would be hell to pay. Since enforcers are gone, cheap shot artists like darcy tucker are free to reign because they only get a little fine and a suspension slapped on them as opposed to an asswhipping in front of thousands of people. if we still had enforcers, this stuff wouldn't happen near as much as it does currently. now people bitch and moan that the nhl is more violent these days than it was back then. well it's your fucking fault. deal with it

if anything the league needs more fighting.

viewership would rise, attendance would go up, maybe get back onto networks.

however, hits like simon's are garbage...

anyone attempting to argue that the nhl doesnt get a bum rap from deals like this are out of their mind.

it's just not as visible to the common viewer, being on oln for one.

plus, people skip over the hockey section in their sports page much more than nba news, even if tehy arent a fan of either sport.

also, people in this thread saying the old "dress and talk like they are from harlem" need to get a fucking clue as to what they are talking about. for one, harlem isnt what you see in movies, esp. not anymore. what to continue to be stereotypical.

the nba associated itself with a hip hop culture in attempt to regain interest in the league. when several events happened and the league got a black eye, stern has tried to dissasociate it. hence the dress code, and attempts to make the players seem more "professional." However, that association is hard to break, and it's hard for many of you bumblefuck bred white boys to disassociate what you see when you flip across BET and what you think all rich black people MUST act like.

it's absurd.

They get to be called "artists," as in cheap shot artists?

Hockey should ban fighting. Why can't hockey be like the NFL? When a QB gets blind sided by a safety blitz no one comes along on the next play and punches the safety out. Hitting is part of the game. Hockey should be the same way. You get checked into the boards? Fine. Shake it off and nail someone else next time or score a goal. Don't be a pussy and have your 'enforcer' fight for you. If you can't handle the hits on the ice, don't play the game. That's my opinion.

I've never played hockey. But of all the physical sports out there where you can get knocked off your ass (rugby, football, etc) they don't fight. To me, if you can't take a hit, don't play the game.
