Significant annual growth in China's military expenditures (double digit); modernization of China's military in space weapons, submarines and even aircraft carriers (offensive capability). Are we headed towards military confrontation with China?

Let China do what it wants, they're many years away from being able to threaten us anywhere outside Asia, and probably further still from being in a place where it wouldn't ruin them to alienate us. 3/9/2007 6:53:30 PM |

I've been saying this for months here and for years elsewhere. Where have you been?
US-China Economic and Security Review Commission August 3-4, 2006 testimony
Quote : | "Thank you. I want to say how much I appreciate and support this Commission. Your hard work has given us the information we need to get an accurate picture of the very puzzling issue of China’s growth. I have long followed your work, and continue to utilize your expertise.
Last year I gave four floor speeches on China’s growing global influence and the impact this has on our national security. These issues covered a broad spectrum, from alarming military modernization to the lack of economic accountability. I testified before this Commission--it was a very concerning picture then, and while the media has turned its attention to other issues, the threat continues to grow.
China is sustaining a 10% economic growth for some years now. Their oil consumption (and need) continues to rise exponentially, doubling and doubling again. China’s military spending growth has been in the double-digits for almost two decades, and that isn’t including large portions that we know they are hiding." |
Senator James M. Inhofe
http://www.uscc.gov/hearings/2006hearings/written_testimonies/06_08_3_4wrts/06_08_3_4_inhofr_senator_statement.php
And others have been saying this for many years:
PS: The book listed above was published in 1999.

James Inhofe has been too busy going on talk shows and saying that global warming is a myth. Perhaps if he would have spent more time on this, we would have a little more news on it. 3/10/2007 1:34:36 PM |

China should just send immigrants here.
Buy up land and build like a million houses (or just buy them) over the course of a couple of years, then all of a sudden, just send over some immigrants. 3/10/2007 2:40:14 PM |

Flawless logic. Of course, it didn't seem to prevent the first World War.

If China wanted to take over the US, they'd have a much easier time doing it economically.
In other words, given our fiscal irresponsibility and the amount of US money flowing in that direction, pretty soon, they can just buy America. 3/11/2007 6:52:36 AM |

Cute sentiment, BobbyDigital, but life doesn't often work that way. If they actually tried to buy everything the price would quickly big up, eating their cash and leaving them with overpriced land. This is what happened to the Japanese which, ultimately, suffered huge losses due to their American realestate investments, most of which had to be sold off in a fire-sale during their 1994 banking crisis. 3/11/2007 1:14:34 PM |

While I seriously doubt that China has any intention of invading or destroying the United States, I see three possible scenarios for limited war with China. One would be a conflict over Taiwan. I don't imagine any real ground action for American troops, but I can see the mother of all dogfights and some serious naval action between a couple of our carrier groups and the PLA Navy. The second would be a repeat of the Korean War, with a combined South Korean-US military force battling the North Koreans and Chinese forces. I think this is much less likely to happen though since China is beginning to shy away from the current North Korean government. The final possibility is some conflict involving the Japanese. If China decides its going to start dropping bombs on Japan (perhaps a spillover from a fight over the Senkaku / Diaoyutai Islands) we could get sucked in.
Most likely though, Chinese military modernization is a threat for its immediate neighbors: Japan, Russia, India, Vietnam, and the Koreas. Given that the People's Republic of China has fought with each of them at one point or another over the last seventy years, most of their neighbors tend to be a touch uneasy of any big military upgrade.
The real threat is that in the event of conflict, a war between the United States and China may potentially go nuclear. China has ICBMs capable of striking the United States, and while they don't have the numbers to melt our entire nation into a sheet of glass, they're more than capable of wiping out a good 20 to 30 of our largest cities. While I seriously doubt either side will go nuclear, it only takes one misunderstanding for someone to hit the red button. 3/11/2007 4:50:12 PM |
