95 tahoe 4wd. million miles on the body 30K on the "new" engine. (230 total)
few months ago i started hearing clicking from the front when turning in 4wd. figured cv joints acting up . does fine in 2wd. well a few days ago clicking started when turning in 2wd, today got my left axle replaced, when i cut the boot, the bearings just fell out. lol. in any case. now does just fine in 2wd no clicking nothing, passenger side axle is fine also. so both axles are ok. if i go and put it in 4wd and try to turn, it clicks again. is it the front differential? i know it has to be something from the transfer case forward. or is it the driveshaft between the transfer case and the front diff? could anyone here take a look at it and perhaps fix it, i looked at advance today, the differential rebuild kit (gears, bearings, etc) is 100-200 bucks, he couldn't really tell me what i need cuz we didn't know exactly what was broken. anyways back to the point, could someone here (with a lift) take a look at it, and perhaps quote me, i really dont have time to do it myself, nor i have a lift.

sometimes when u replace cv joints with reman. ones.. they still click and u have to bring them back. we went through like 3 sets on the celica till my dad said fuggit and bought new toyota ones/or reman toyota ones 3/12/2007 9:07:02 PM |

no i took it to axle connections today, they replaced the left front axle, and cut up the boots on the other one to check it. so both axles are fine. gotta be something else. and yes, only when turning 3/12/2007 9:12:02 PM |

uh, did they replace the boots they cut...?
also, you can't always tell if one is bad just by looking at it. 3/12/2007 9:16:57 PM |

yeah, i don't mind at least taking a look/listen to it this weekend or next week if you don't find anyone else first. should feel up to doing stuff again by then.
i'm guessing you've ruled out it being normal drivetrain noise in 4wd? you typically will get some clicking, etc. as the drivetrain binds and unloads from the 50/50 torque split at the t-case.
the only other two things i'd consider off the top of my head would the spider/side gears or the driveshaft u joints. unlikely to be the u joints if it's just when turning. could possibly be a wheel bearing assembly too i guess. hard to say without hearing it.
i'm still betting it's the other cv shaft though. it'll be toast real soon anyway unless they replaced the boots that they cut to check it. 3/12/2007 11:47:31 PM |

throw a lawn sprinkler, u know the one that shoots water vertically and moves back and forth under ur junk. leave it for an hour or so. it'll clean the underneath up pretty well 3/13/2007 9:32:11 PM |
