These dogs are as good as dead on Wednesday. Harnett County is closed on Wed for euthanization.
Me and hotcurlz24 are going Tuesday to get ourselves a dog. If you are interested in adoption or fostering call 673-7389 and ride with us. The dogs are only $20 and cats $10, HC does not hold them for long before putting them down so you will most likely save a life.....
We are leaving early in the morning so hit me up now if you are interested. You will se many of these dogs up for rescue on craigslist because on Wednesday they will be put down. 3/12/2007 11:30:33 PM |

awesome
harnett county AC has been all over craigslist.. i'm glad the shelter is getting attention and buildin awareness.
if you need help/advice pm me. i've done a lot of rescue work on my own and with rescues in the area. there are a few vets in the area that will do vaccines for cost (or close too) for rescues.
i hope the 2 mama dogs and their pups are pulled 3/13/2007 7:43:51 AM |

i feel the same way about that kitten. The woman was a bitch when I called too. I wanted to see if they could wait until Thursday and I would pick it up when I'm back in town. She's like "he's available til 4 this afternoon and if he doesnt get taken he'll be put down first thing in the morning". Now I feel like shit. Had I known yesterday I could have saved him. 3/13/2007 12:32:24 PM |

I'm not trying to insult what you guys are doing at all, but the people who see this and think "Oh, it's only $20? I guess I'll get one." probably aren't the people who should be adopting needy pets. They'll just end up in classifieds in a few months when they move to somewhere that doesn't allow pets or one of the other excuses people come up with when they've adopted something they can't handle.
For people who are looking, though, I'm glad you posted it. Now I know a good place to look when I'm ready to get a pet. 3/13/2007 1:09:19 PM |

that's shitty^
I've pulled 40+ puppies/dogs from Franklin County Animal Control. The animal control officers there are nice and always willing to work with you. As long as they aren't out of room they'll hold an animal for you or for a rescue who's working to get it into foster care. They are even more limited on funds and resources and the facilities are pretty bleak. They don't ask for a dime when you adopt an animal there.
It's a shame Harnett county won't hold an animal.. especially when they're closed by 4pm. last time i checked most people work until 5 these days...
poor animals.
Skwinkle made a good point. A lot of people buy or adopt animals on impulses. vetting an animal for its first year can cost on average $500-$800 (vaccines, spay/neuter, microchip, fecals, bloodwork, etc..) plus the cost of food and other supplies. Saving a life is great and i applaud you for doing so just be cautious when placing an animal. Do a home visit, educate them, check references. Go with them to Petsmart to help them pick up what they need, give them a list or starter packet, etc...

IF YOU GUYS WANT ANY DOGS FROM THERE YOU HAVE TO LEAVE NOW, THEY DO NOT CLOSE PROMPTLY AT 4:00 but you need to get there before 4:00. (takes an hour driving) It's $20 even and you have to get a receipt for a rabies shot sent there within 72 hours (thats like $20)
I dont know why these lazy people do not have all of the dogs on the website but there are a bunch of adorable puppies that are not posted, despite today being their last day. 3/13/2007 2:12:28 PM |

There is normally someone there to close to 5....but you DO wanna allow for travel time. If you're coming from like Gorman St. close to 40, it shouldn't take you more than 45 minutes if you take Lake Wheeler--Ten Ten--401--55--210 (in Angier). The vet clinic is on Hwy 210.
And yes, that shepherd mix is tooo adorable. 3/13/2007 2:17:10 PM |

They don't have many online, but the Orange County shelter in Chapel Hill usually has a lot of animals. We got three dogs from there over the course of my childhood. 3/13/2007 3:50:15 PM |

Agreed. They ran a week-long series of articles in the Charlotte Observer a few years ago about how bad the situation was. That also being said, don't allow this thread to be an "impulse buy" thing and have somebody adopt an animal if they aren't ready. Help out this facility if are ready to adopt, but don't do it on impulse.3/13/2007 5:40:57 PM |

I've rescued 6 puppies from Harnett County this week.
I pulled 2 on Monday - the golden ret/shep puppies. found them great home with coworkers on Tuesday. While we were there we saw a litter of 4 puppies. They said they wouldn't be available untill Tuesday even though they were Owner Surrenders. WTF. They hold O/S for 72 hours before being available.. Ok. So these 4 would only be available for a mere 3 hours on Tuesday afternoon for adoption. Then they'd be put down Wednesday. Thats not a fair chance. So we talked the animal control officers into letting us come get them early Wed morning. Which we did. So they were saved. They never were posted on the site. They had at least 30-40o ther dogs and puppies in the shelter that weren't listed on the website. Most of which were going down on Wednesday. I'm glad the shelter is building awareness but they really need to photograph more animals and post them.
/rant
anyways. 2 of the 4 are still available. I've given them their first round of vaccines (distemper, parvo, parainfluenza, corona, lepto, etc), dewormer, a good bath. They are flea, tick, and mite free. They're a shep/lab/hound/? mix. All very sweet and playful and in good health. I'm asking a small adoption fee of $25 to cover part of the cost. If you're interested pm me.
male
female
already adopted but aren't they cute (they were listed on website)

because the majority of the county is rural and people are for lack of a better term "ignorant". They don't see a problem having an unspayed animal roaming around fucking everything in sight. And when their own pets have puppies, it isn't uncommon for people to dump the puppies on the side of the road by a field. Or they might not have the money to get their pet spayed.
Plus there are a lot of military people that surrender the pets when they get deployed or are moving to a different base.3/30/2007 11:11:09 AM |

Honestly you can tell they operate on a much tighter budget. The shelter is about 1/10th the size of the one in Wake County and I am sure they get in just as many (if not more) dogs.
My main objection with how they operate is that they don't even bother listing many adoptable animals on the website. I went out there a few times before actually getting a dog, both times on a Tuesday, they had a ton of animals that the lady told me were up for adoption (with less than 24 hours to go) and were not on the Harnett County website. She said "the best thing to do is just call" if I wanted a dog.
I am sorry but it is not that damn hard to post something on the internet, especially when its an adoptable animal that has less than 24 hours before being put down. ] 3/30/2007 3:19:12 PM |

^^^ is pretty right. my family lives in lillington and the road we live on goes down to the cape fear. a lot of people drop their dogs off down there and they wander up to our house. that's actually how we have come to own many of ours, and we've always tried to find homes for as many of the others as we could.

^^it isn't that hard, but I imagine they are too understaffed to really worry about that. I know a lot of places only have their websites up-to-date because of volunteers. 3/30/2007 7:03:48 PM |

I guess thats the difference between a real job and a government one.
At a real job when you are understaffed you work harder and faster, at a government job you just don't do shit and staffing is your excuse. They have a full time attendant and usually 2 or 3 officers sitting around waiting on calls each time I have visited. I think posting the maybe 15 or 20 dogs on the website would not terribly over burden them. 3/30/2007 7:38:27 PM |
