Alright, I had the norovirus (stomach flu) yesterday and couldn't take my hw to class (it was a 800 class, so finding someone else to was out of the question) and the professor won't let me turn it in. Isn't there a University Policy that says he has to allow us to make up hw? 3/15/2007 10:08:30 AM |

I think there is a way to force them to take it if you get a doctor's note and have the University officially excuse the absence. 3/15/2007 10:16:09 AM |

If you don't have proof, he doesn't have to do a thing. If you were sick, it's still at their discression; you're just free to call them heartless if they say no.3/15/2007 2:52:20 PM |

http://www.ncsu.edu/policies/academic_affairs/courses_undergrad/REG02.20.3.php
Quote : | "2.2.1. Illness or injury when certified by an attending physician. Physicians on the Student Health Service staff do not provide written excuses. Because of student confidentiality, information can only be released directly by the Counseling Center or Student Health Services in case of crisis or with the student's written authorization." |
Quote : | "2.2.3. The instructor's attendance policy, including procedures for submitting excuses and for scheduling makeup work when the excuses are accepted, shall be clearly defined in the syllabus to be distributed on the first day of class." |
Quote : | "2.2.5. Because each instructor has the responsibility to implement grading procedures that are fair and equitable, the instructor shall devise a system for making up missed assignments and examinations that does not unfairly penalize the student when an excused absence is accepted. Such make-up work shall be at a comparable level of difficulty with the original assignment or examination. Make-up examinations shall be at a time and place mutually agreeable to the instructor and student." |
Basically, you are out of luck. Although its a bit after the fact, I'd recommend buying a cheap scanner to prevent future occurrences of this from happening.
And yes, showing up to the professor's office hours and keeping friendly open communications will help. They might have a very hard "no" policy in place ... but come grade-time at the end of the semester ... if you've been a good student, and they know you by face/name, meh, some things can be reconsidered/overlooked.

well, I've got Baliga (ECE 331), and he's the only one who won't help me out. I have the note from SHS, so I may go talk to the COE ECE Dean. Basically, he won't let me turn in the hw that was due wednesday morn. because he posts the solutions immediately after class. I offered to do other problems as well, but he still says no. Sounds like a fair deal, but he's being an ass. 3/15/2007 7:29:14 PM |

One final suggestion, talk it over one last time. In general, going over somebody's head isn't going to make relations even easier ... most likely will only make them worse. Yes, most likely 90% the instructor being hard about it ... but still try to talk it over one last time. 3/15/2007 7:45:33 PM |
