you know how sendek finished 8th (4-12) in the acc in his first season at state (17-15)...
then the team beat duke in the acc tournament and went on a huge run (and lost to carolina in the finals)

then we got to the NIT

LITTLE TRIVIA QUESTION like the one i posed during the acc tournament... (if anyone remembers)

who did we lose to in the NIT during NCSU's "magic run" during herb's first year? i think it was one round earlier, but still

We lost to Wake Forest in 2000 in the NIT semifinals.

Didnt make the tourney until Anthony Grundy put the team on his back in 2001 to save Herb's job.


That was the year Herb Sendek didn't play Tim Wells a SINGLE MINUTE on senior night despite the fact that he had STARTED some games that season.

Herb didn't even realize it.

So Tim WElls goes off for like 13 ppg in the NIT to take us to NYC. Wake ended up winning the NIT that year led by Robert O'Kelley and some other cats. O'Kelley was All ACC his freshman year and then proceeded to suck balls for the next three years until the NIT when he strung together some good games.

^There was a losing season between the NIT Final Four and the first NCAA bid (2002).

And if this is history repeating itself, then the visiting team won in 1997...so maybe that will hold true this time?

yeah you're right... RK, DT, KI's senior year they went like 13-16.


The confusion on my part was that we went to the NCAA tourney in the '01-'02 season.

The NIT semis in the '99-'00 season.

The '00-'01 season was the shitastic one. We started out 5-2 in the ACC and we lost 9 straight to close out 5-11 i believe.


Then Herb made the idiotic decision to kick Damien Wilkens off the team. That was my breaking point with Herb. We could have been SO good the next two years.

Then when he lost Powell because he woudlnt let Hodge defer to him I really lost my mind. Terrible coach, i get mad just thinking about what could have been the past few years.

Oh well, Sidney is here to right the ship hopefully. Next year we find out if Sidney is for real or not.

yes, the tournament is a national event, and mcd aas are national prospects, but it's not as if herb was very good in either of these categories.

You can't really think kicking Damien Wilkins off the team was a made move. That guy was a big time underachiever here. He didn't deserve to wear NCSU red after the shit he pulled. I'll never forget his 0 point, 1 rebound performance against UNC Greensboro.

i'm not denying that he did a better job than les. under les we weren't even on the acc radar, sendek put us on that radar, hence my comment. however, not being the worst team in the conference and being on the national radar are not the same thing. herb achieved only one of these.

He could score, rebound, pass, and defend. The only thing he couldn't do was shoot. As a #2 scorer he would have thrived, but he was forced to do too much because Grundy hadn't put everything together yet.

When you kick a guy off the team who is the #1 recruit in the nation by Bob Gibbons and pretty much a unanimous top 5... and he ends up having a lengthy career in the NBA... you've made a bad move.

We had a pretty solid team in '01-'02 despite Archie, Evtimov (horrid his freshman year), and Collins logging some major minutes. We would have been big time those two years if Wilkens had stayed.
