Tubby has been mediocre and does Uk have a good recruiting class coming in? Pitino had some interesting opinions on the UK boosters and not being satisfied with anything but the championship. Kind of interesting that they were an overtime period away from 3 peating in 98, that would be unreal in college basketball.

roy boy ain't going anywhere folks

As a Kentucky Fan

I'd be very happy if Tubby left for the bobcats.

He won a championship with someone else's team, then has steadily declined into mediocrity since.

Continues to bring in big talent, then they leave underdeveloped and as a disapointment.

The UK fanbase wont stand for it, and there has been unrest for years already. but they feel trapped behind his immense contract and an AD that seems to be more interested in the politics of having a black head coach in the sec, esp. at a school with the history that UK had in that realm.

and you cant put the near threepeat on him, he was only there for 98.

with sick talent on that team to boot.

UK does not have a good recruiting class for 2007 unless they can get Patterson and Lucas, both of which seem unlikely now. My bet is that Tubby stays though, even though I want him gone. He won't be coaching the Bobcats though, Michigan would be more likely if he did get fired.

I'm not sure Tubby's talent level isn't the issue here, he hasnt brought in close to the number of elite players as the other elite programs, unc, duke, kansas etc

I was just listening to Primetime with the Packman, and he had three interesting names. Of course, right now it's all speculation, but who gives a damn? It's not us this time, and it's fun.

Here are the names:

Billy Guillespe
John Calipari
Rick Pitino

Said it would be unbelievable for Pitino to basically say, "See ya Louisville, I'm going back home."

Also said he and Calipari have the same agent (noted that he was saying all along Calipari was NO WHERE CLOSE to signing with State. Just visited after expressing interest. Was nowhere near a done deal) and said if Calipari goes to UK, they'll be pretty ridiculous in two years (even if on probation )

Pitino is NOT leaving. He loves his kids there, the AD at UL is amazing, and they have a fanbase that isn't moronic..

[Edited on March 22, 2007 at 2:49 PM. Reason : calipari will be the next UK head coach IMO..]

haha...yeah. Packman was just saying that'd be an unbelievable story and media frenzy, which, of course, it would be.

Wasn't saying it was going to happen, or that it's even remotely likely.

uk will be willing to dish out a contract theres no way memphis could match.

tubbys contract was second to only pitino, IIRC.

originally something like 8 yrs / 20mil base at uk

oh damn: (from 2003)

Quote :
"The Kentucky Wildcats and Louisville Cardinals are equally creative in crafting deals for their head coach. One advantage of setting up a separate athletic association outside the university is that it’s not bound by a state law stipulating that contracts can't be longer than four years. Tubby Smith's new deal with the association runs through 2011, and automatically extends to 2013 if Kentucky earns a trip to the Final Four in any of those seasons. No financial buyout is written to protect against Smith leaving for another job. But few places could afford him, and he has millions of incentives to stay, anyway.

Along with his $200,000 base salary -- less than the $260,000 North Carolina will be paying Williams in a contract that's still unsigned -- Smith receives guaranteed annual TV/radio, shoe and apparel income ranging from $1.55 million this season to $2.175 million in 2010-11. He also has a retention bonus of $1.5 million if he stays at Kentucky through April 2007. An additional $2.5 million is due if Smith is still on the bench in 2011.

The deal is loaded with additional incentives, including 20 prime, lower-level basketball tickets and eight tickets to Wildcat football games. Smith is also due $50,000 if his team’s GPA is 3.0 or better. There are four weeks of paid vacation.

And everything is guaranteed in the event Smith is disabled and unable to coach or dies, a clause that athletic officials say is almost unheard of in college sports.

Last year, presumably because of his stature as the Wildcats boss, Smith also pocketed more than $150,000 in outside income, including $15,000 from Michael Jordan’s basketball camp and a $5,000 speaking fee paid by the U.S. Navy and Department of Defense.

“It would be pretty difficult to spirit a coach away from all that," acknowledged Kansas interim AD Drue Jennings.

It's cool to know that there are other Kentucky fans on here, but I have to disagree with you. It's actually the opposite. Tubby brings in mediocre talent and develops them into hard-nosed, fudamentally sound, NBA ready contributers. Obviously, he's not producing stars, but that's because they don't have that much talent to begin with. I doubt that the likes of Chuck Hayes and Keith Bogans and Gerald Fitch and Erik Daniels and Kelena Azubuike (sp?) would have made NBA rosters without Tubby's guidance. Tubby is a solid, respectable coach and recieved an unfair mountain of criticism from a rabid and to some extent latently racist fan base. That being said, it probably is time for the team to make a change. I'm concerned with the prospect of Calipari as a coach, but I won't freak out over early, unreliable, internet rumors. I wish Pitino would have never left. That dude was a God.

Tubby's coaching philosophies will fit in nicely with the Big Ten. Every Minnesota fan out there should be happy, because they just got a major upgrade over whatever crap fest they've had going on for the past couple of years. Granted, they still won't be contending for any championships, but within 3 years I expect them to be fucking up people's brackets as they upset some overrated team and make it to the Sweet Sixteen.

My dream signing, although it would never happen a million years, would be Billy Donovan. It would be like Pitino 2.0.

this is a great move for him...he'll be under no pressure to win immediately and has time to build the program. this job will show whether he's a great coach or a mediocre one (i personally think he's pretty damn good). hard to blame the UK fans for getting restless though

Travis Ford is one of my favorite basketball players of all-time and I don't imagine there's a person in the state of Kentucky of who isn't fond of him, however, to give him the job would at this point would probably be a mistake. It wouldn't destroy me and I'm open to taking a chance on a young and up and coming coach, especially a former player, but it's in Kentucky's interest to play the field a little more and see what kind of interest is out there for the job.
