Not in the same place, this time the ship the Brits were on was definitely in Iraqi waters. Last time there was very poor weather conditions so there was some ambiguity on where British boats were, not this time. 3/23/2007 1:30:30 PM |

^^^ To show the US/Britain that have the power to capture coalition forces if they want to. Basically it is in retaliation for the arrest of the 5 'diplomats' a few years ago and the disappearance/defection/kidnapping of former and current high ranking revolutionary guard officers in turkey and iraq lately. Besides, Iran warned just last week (maybe early this week) that they were going to start capturing coalition officers. So really this shouldn't surprise anyone. 3/23/2007 1:49:35 PM |

it's just posturing
there's no way a beheading will come from this, it would clearly be on the hands of the iranian gov, not some independent turrist group. they likely won't be harmed in the least. 3/23/2007 2:52:17 PM |

Most likely what will happen is that the Iranians will parade a few of the British on national television where they'll make apologies for Western Imperialism and insults against Islam or whatnot then release them back to the British. Iran wouldn't be stupid enough to do something serious to the captured soldiers given the sensitive situation they're in with the entire nuclear policy. The last thing they need is to provoke the international community and give the British and Americans a legitimate excuse to take more aggressive actions against them (ie. bombing runs). 3/23/2007 3:02:00 PM |

I have to agree that I don't think they will be harmed. This is more than likely just a stunt for Iran to show off it's "muscle" if you will - an opportunity to show the world that they think they can go around and step on people's toes just like everyone else does.
The Iranian government knows full well that if they harmed a single one of those guys that the entire western world would band together to rain down hellfire and brimstone on their asses. They'd be looking at WW3.
They may do some dirty dealing behind closed doors, but I don't think they're in a position to be viewed as a full-on terrorist nation. 3/24/2007 4:14:21 AM |

im just dumbfounded by their reasoning.....are they really this stupid politically, to kidnap 15 soldiers because they strayed into their waters? I read a quote from an Iranian general that this shows how they are prepared for an attack anytime. Flexing muscle? That doesn't make any sense to do at this point. Do they not understand this severly degrades what little political prowless they have left? Most likely they will release them, because if they don't, they have got to be the dumbest mother fuckers ever.....to give justification to be attacked by the worlds superpowers. 3/24/2007 8:36:56 AM |

Quote : | "Iran ‘to try Britons for espionage’ FIFTEEN British sailors and marines arrested by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards off the coast of Iraq may be charged with spying.
A website run by associates of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, reported last night that the Britons would be put before a court and indicted.
Referring to them as “insurgents”, the site concluded: “If it is proven that they deliberately entered Iranian territory, they will be charged with espionage. If that is proven, they can expect a very serious penalty since according to Iranian law, espionage is one of the most serious offences." |
