So to fix the "leaking fuel or oil" igniting they reflash the computers to turn the engine off when the exhaust gets too hot? I hope I read that wrong.

holy christ, so if it gets too hot they have to pull over to the side of the road and let it cool

hope no one plans to haul anything with those shitboxes

I want flaming tailpipes

Basically they run rich at idle so when the turbo manifold heats up it ignites... atleast thats what i'm seeing.

damn listen to that pos knock. and ford wonders why they have such a tough time selling trucks compared to gm when fords are so much better.

How does one happen to miss something like that during testing? Good job Ford, you're doing a great job climbing your way out of all that financial trouble

Sounds like they need to remap their injector pulse sequence.

Most of the newer engines use multiple injection events per firing cycle to cut down on formation of oxides of nitrogen (by trying to eliminate extreme pressure spikes in the cylinder which produce higher rates of dissociation of diatomic nitrogen and formation of nitrogen oxides).

They also use a post (or very late in the firing cycle) injection event to provide raw fuel in the exhaust (a rich mixture, if you will) to provide for regeneration in the catalyst. I bet money that's where they're having issues.

If a diesel is timed correctly, there really is no way to run one rich. Well, there is...but within normal operating parameters (and even some extreme ones) there isn't.

HEUI injection systems, however, have had a few issues here and there.

it has something to do with the particle filter, and it burning the stuff off.

^right. i'm pretty sure all '07 and newer don't even have a cat. they've been replaced with a diesel particulate filter. the computer tells the engine to go into an overheat mode to burn off all the excess build-up on the dpf. i don't think this problem with the fords is anything major but just a minor issue with the burn-off sequence.

^yep. btw, your beloved gm's are having problems too.

i think a few problems are to be expected with these new diesels. everyone has made some major changes.

i'm wondering how aftermarket exhaust is going to play out on these things...

lol, makes it sound like you have a rowdy cam...

my 99 has dropped two injectors in the past year, but i'm pretty sure they were due to a bad injector wiring harness. Navistar's brilliant idea to incorporate them into the valve cover gasket.

yeah I've already had 3 injectors replaced

I'm gonna carry it back when I get some free time and have them check the rest of them

yeah, you wish. their burn-off process only activates when the vehicle is going 30mph or faster and the exhaust incorporates a "cool down" feature which prevents any possibility of this happening.

GM's got their shit together.

good thing is even though my truck is an '07 classic (the new body style is labeled as an '07.5), my engine is labeled as an '06 so it doesn't have the dpf which is another reason why i chose the truck i did.

^^^the fords have slots in the exhaust to bring in fresh air also. i'm assuming that's what you're talking about not being able to see the pics.

it hasn't hit the media yet, but gm is having problems. i've talked to several techs i used to work with and they're starting to come back in with exhaust related problems.

i haven't heard of any common issues with the new 6.7 cummins, but i imagine something will pop up at some point.

pics are fixed.

yeah, i figured it's only a matter of time before they all have issues with this shit. i wonder if big trucks are required to have a dpf also? raleigh will be getting some '07 shit in a few months. i'll have to go check it out. i know the '04 and newer have an egr system installed. shit sounds good as hell actually. sounds like a giant blow-off valve. kinda wish my egr system was that loud.

if the ford wasn't drawing air into its exhaust it wouldn't burn like that.
it would look more like a camp fire and not a blow torch.
