is there a standard method that most people use?
in my office (only 4 people) we just made up a system: first round games worth 1 point, second round worth 2 points, etc. 4/1/2007 11:42:06 AM |

that system is retarded in my opinion.
you shouldn't be awarded more for picking say... Florida going to the sweet sixteen than picking VCU over Dook or Wichita State over whoever they beat last year. 4/1/2007 12:22:54 PM |

favorites winning = 1x mild upsets = 1.5x big upsets = 2x
FYI, making bracket scoring "fairer" also makes it less fun because it lessens the chances that some dolt might win the pool (which is why you implement "fairer" scoring, in the first place).

^^ a guy in my pool was in last place (out of 9) after the first two rounds b/c he doesn't know anything about college basketball, but he picked nearly every higher seed and an all 1 seed final four, with florida losing to ohio state (b/c he's awesome and claims osu as his "team"), and he's now in second place (granted florida is going to spank osu again, and he won't win).
how it goes i guess, but the moral of that story is that i agree with you.
^ there's nothing less fun than watching someone who hasn't watched a single basketball game all year win it going by all 1 seeds.

Which is what has happened in most of my pools. What bullshit.
tOSU should have lost in the 2nd round. I had UT beating them. And Texas A&M in the FF.
Anyhow my pools just go by total games right. 1 point each.4/1/2007 12:56:00 PM |

I want to do one where in each game, picking each team to make it gets you 1/4 of the points for each. Picking the correct winner gets you 1/4 and picking the correct loser gets you 1/4. In the end it would probably end up with similar results to a standard system but I'd be curious to see. 4/1/2007 12:59:02 PM |

my personal scoring system is "if I miss any games, I lose." I always lose.

I wish I had entered a bracket challenge this year with my bracket. It kicked ass. I have OSU beating FL tonight. 4/2/2007 5:17:48 PM |

i did the 1,2,4,8,16,32 system
which seemed fine at the time
since i picked the entire final 4
although i had georgetown beating florida
and this one guy has florida winning it all
and right now i'm up 31 points on him
so if florida wins he wins the bracket by 1 point
even though he picked Central Connecticut State to upset OSU in the first round!!!! 4/2/2007 5:19:36 PM |

like others said 1 pt for 1st round, 2 for 2nd etc. you may not think so, but one or two points from the 1st round usually makes the difference, plus it rewards thsoe who got their final four right etc. 4/2/2007 5:21:10 PM |

we did 1, 2, 4 etc. for each round but we also added the seed # for each correct pick (so picking a 16 seed in the first round would be worth 17 and a 1 seed is only worth 2), but I don't like this method as much as just the 1, 2, 4 etc. method 4/2/2007 5:25:11 PM |

yeah thats pretty gay, it rewards dumbasses who pick a ton of upsets and hell if you get a 14 beating a 3 that cancels out 5 or 6 correct picks from someone who picked one upset maybe and didnt get it. 4/2/2007 5:30:30 PM |

Straight up, with bonuses for calling each round. Start at one point for each first round game picked correctly... two points for each second round game, with bonus points then awarded to anyone who got all of the sweet 16. Then four points for each sweet 16 game picked correctly, with bonus points awarded for getting the entire elite 8 right. Then 8 points per elite 8 game, with bonus points awarded for getting the full final four. 15 for each final four game, with a bonus for picking the championship game contenders. 30 for picking the champion correctly, with bonuses for getting each team's points predicted within 10 points.
Example:
Someone gets 31 points in the first round, then in the round of 32 has 16 winners. 7 of his teams advance to the elite 8, but all 4 of his final four picks make it. he gets both final four matchups right but loses the championship game. They would get
31 - first round 32 + agreed bonus (usu. 10 points) - second round 28 - Sweet 16 32 + agreed bonus (usu. 20 points) - Elite 8 30 + agreed bonus (usu. 25 points) - Final Four 0 for being a n00b and picking the wrong winner - NC game
would finish with 208 points. In most years, this rewards picking a few upsets correctly. In this year's tourney, the brackets that would have been torpedoed the worst would be those of d00k fans, Wisconsin fans, and Texas fans
