Oh, cool. I saw the one in Tampa a while back. I think the tickets there were ~$20, which included admission to the museum that was holding the exhibit.

I enjoyed it a lot, though it's really hard to wrap your mind around the fact that they are real people who used to have normal lives when you're just looking at a set of eyeballs attached to a brain or half a guy's head.

^ agreed. i saw it in atlanta last year, and about halfway through i had to leave. not because it was grotesque, but because i had this thought go through my mind: "how would i feel if one of these preserved bodies was my father???"

that being said, it was actually incredibly interesting.

I saw that this year in Boston. Actually, it was called BodyWorld. Anyway, it was amazing to see how accurately the human bodies are preserved and really leads to an insight and understanding of your own body. Also, one look told me that "mouse bladder" syndrome in girls is not all in the head. I'd highly recommend seeing it.

I saw it in Seattle. It's cool, but not really "gory" like I kind of expected. Most of the exhibits look almost waxy.

The Tampa version was very cool. I especially enjoyed the guy near the end who was displayed in a 12-15 foot glass case as 2 inch lateral cross sections from head to toe and spread out along the length of the case.

No most of them are not.

Generally, the exhibits are either:

a. Full bodies with the skin removed and placed in a sports pose (like throwing a football or a discuss).

b. A specific "piece" of the body such as an organ or a bone, with a little plaquard next to it telling little fun facts. These pieces are in cases.

My favorite was how they somehow isolated all the blood vessels for various organs so that they kinda glowed and you couldn't see anything else. I also liked the baby exhibit where they showed babies in various stages of development and various dieases.

My best piece of advice is don't bother getting the little walkie-talkie thing that gives you an audio tour. It's not worth it and often just repeats the plaquards.

I'm in seattle, this show has been here for several months. apparently pretty successful.

FTR, i will never go see this. theres serious moral/ethics issues regarding how they got their corpses.

heres a hint: "executed chinese political prisoners", none of whom gave consent for their bodies to be used in such a manner.

this bodies exhibit in Durham is not the same as Body Worlds. Body Worlds is much larger and they only use corpses from folks who have filled out their forms prior to death to be donated to Body Worlds b/c they wanted to be included in the show.

i read the n&o article on Bodies, and i'm not sure about the natural death unclaimed bodies thing, but i'm still going.

funny how a lot of you people don't realize that they use cadavers, such as the ones used in this exhibit, in everyday medical research throughout the med schools in the US. Yeah some may have signed consent forms prior to death, however i have read where the bodies of "john doe" homeless people and such are used as well. the price you pay to cure what ails ya.

I got an email today saying that if you have at least 15 people with student IDs you can get in for $10 each. That's more than half off if you have enough people who want to go together. 15/each for audio tour.

I saw it earlier with legatic and I definitely think it's worth going to see.

My only quasi-complaint is that they don't have a model of the heart's circulatory system that I can buy and have as a paper weight Also that they don't tell you that there is stuff to touch at the end, because I was thinking about poking the models through out the exhibit.

On the website they have videos with kids in the them and what not but I wanted to hear from someone who isn't trying to make the exhibit look good.

Has anyone here seen it and thought it was gross or inappropriate in any way?

While I don't have any kids, I didn't find it inappropriate at all, and I did see several kids there. It is not gory at all. The models look more like wax, and less like anything you'd see in any horror movie.

they take school kids to it all the time. Body Worlds (the better one) does not recommend visitors under the age of 8.

i think it would be a very healthy thing for a kid that age.

it's kind of like walking through an anatomy textbook.

what I'm curious about is how they dissected the entire nervous system out of the body. That has to take skills and time since nerves blend in with muscle and vessels.

one of the bodies exhibits is out here in san diego right now, saw it with the girlfriend a couple weeks ago. pretty cool, very educational. that body world one looks more fun though.

Who didn't know this? Cause I read the thread and haven't seen any evidence that folks are unaware like you're suggesting...

That fact is that there's a difference between using a body without consent for medical research...and using a body without consent to profit off the curiosities of uninformed mall-goers who may not know where these bodies are from... We're all getting screwed here--except for the guys collecting the cash.
