...remember that at least it can't be worse than this
Quote : | "Bridgewater State set NCAA Division III records for runs, hits, RBIs and victory margin Monday, routing Newbury 57-1 in seven innings.
Bridgewater State also broke the NCAA all-divisions record for RBIs and tied the mark for hits, finishing with 54 RBIs and 44 hits.
Steve Smith had seven hits, 10 RBIs and scored seven times to help Bridgewater State break the Division III records for runs and margin of victory set in Marietta's 48-0 victory over La Roche in 1999. Smith tied the record for hits in a game.
The 54 RBIs broke the all-divisions mark of 53 set by Division II St. Francis of Illinois in a 1996 victory over Robert Morris. The 44 hits tied the record set by St. Francis in that 1996 game.
Suffolk set the previous Division III RBI mark of 43 in a 2005 victory over Southern Vermont, and Baldwin-Wallace set the old Division III hits record of 42 in a 2002 win over Lake Erie." |
I think there's at least one Steve Smith in every sport now

unless you're stealing bases and shit, baseball is one of the few sports where its ok to keep scoring. i mean you can't tell a batter to intentionally make an out 4/10/2007 5:50:18 PM |

i was gonna say that Manchester United's 7-1 rout of Roma earlier today would've been a good example, but no, this is definitely worse 4/10/2007 5:50:57 PM |

^^^Good point, but you'd think after 30-40 runs a starter might be taken out and not have the chance to get seven hits
I've seen it where guys who have the exact same first and last names have thier middle initials on there jerseys

yeah, baseball is completely different than basketball and football. in BB and FB, you have a clear choice to make with each possession or play. You can choose to hold on the the ball and score only at the end of the shot clock, or attempt short running plays instead of continuously throwing down field.
but in baseball, there is no reason not to try to make good, solid hits. If their pitcher sucks or they are so bad at fielding that they can't get an out, then that's their fault. furthermore, you have to try to run bases and make runs whenever you get a hit. you can't just stand there and wait for them to tag you.
^ ok, that's true. you can/should play your bench as deep as possible, i guess. unless, of course, they wanted to break the records or something. I don't seem to recall anyone accusing NCSU of running up the score against Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl when we left Philip Rivers in explicitly for the reason of letting him get the Gator Bowl record. As soon as the got the record, though, he came out.

like would it be STEVE X. SMITH, or S.X. Smith??
[Edited on April 10, 2007 at 5:55 PM. Reason : yeah, any sport where time is not kept, it would be hard to not run up the score if it was that much] 4/10/2007 5:54:34 PM |

Damn talk about an ass kicking. I bet Newbury committed at least 10 errors too.
If I was the manager of the winning team, once I got up by about 20 runs, I would have put players in the wrong positions (other than catcher and pitcher) and made everyone hit from the other side of the plate just for the fuck of it.

DAMN, 57 runs, 44 hits! That's a shitload of offense. I remember breaking the state record in high school for most hits combined by 2 teams in a game, which was 38. I played for Bertie and we were playing C.B. Aycock that night. Funny thing is, C.B. Aycock and another school broke the record again 2 nights later with 40 hits. But 44 hits by one team is ridiculous! 4/10/2007 6:47:10 PM |

i had 6 hits in high school when my team only had 17 hits........i cant believe there was only one guy with only seven hits...........44 hits will make a ton of at bats for a team.........some guys could have got up like 12-13 times and if the pitching was that bad you would think someone would have more than 7 hits...... 4/10/2007 7:10:37 PM |

well the guy that got 7 hits was probaly one of the few that didn't get subbed. I'm sure they used all the backups they wanted to play. 4/10/2007 7:21:46 PM |

AHAHA... that kid that was about to cry in the Taco Bell in Phenix City, AL might disagree.

I think you are confusing PR's Junior and Senior year bowls. We only beat ND 28-6 IIRC. The next year in the Tangerine Bowl we beat Kansas like 56-23. That was the year Phil stayed in the whole game and set the record and then came out.4/10/2007 10:51:49 PM |

67 at-bats 5 errors (we'll be gracious and assume all 5 resulted in getting on base and not advancement) 20 walks = 92 plate appearances
Even if all 9 starters stayed in the game that would just barely be 10 at bats per player. Instead, they had 15 different people come to bat (averaging out to 6 per hitter). As it turns out, the most anyone had was 10 plate appearances (8 at-bats, 2 walks).4/10/2007 11:35:06 PM |

i wasnt saying it was possible in that game.........i just threw 12-13 at bats out there during my post...i didnt know i was gonna be called out for it (should have known)..........turns out if he was the lead off batter he could have got 11......(so i was one off)........either way they COULD have with a few more errors 4/10/2007 11:53:11 PM |
